Lightbulb Chainsaw: Buy here or in the US?

I'm looking for a chainsaw, and have chosen a Husqvarna. When browsing and comparing online, I see that in Australia the Husqvarna's are much more expensive than in the US!

    For instance, a Husqvarna 575XP:

    AUSTRALIA,
    http://bridgeland.com.au/?page=new&t...Husqvarna&s=10
    AUD $1549

    US,
    http://www.portable-electric-power-g..._chain_saw.htm
    USD 689/706 = AUD 902/924

Add shipping costs, maybe some taxes, wouldn't it be cheaper to buy this stuff overseas?

    Thanks,
    Wooded

I am not sure how customs look at this. If you are unlucky they may charge you their share. Is the difference in cost worth the hassle? If the saw goes wrong there may be subtle differences in the internals and parts could be a problem.

I don't know this, but you should certainly investigate before commiting. Huskys are very good saws by the way. I have owned two in past times.

What would happen should you need to claim on the warranty Wooded?

Its the same with Paslode nail guns imported from the US on ebay with no warranty. I would have saved around only $20 including postage etc so I didnt bother.

This is no ebay, this is an official Husqvarna dealer. I would expect to have a worldwide warranty on these goods wouldn't you? If you buy something in Brisbane, but move to Perth, do you always have to go back to Brisbane to claim warrantly? Would expect a local dealer will deal with it.

If the price on the US website is including US taxes, and Australian customs will charge me with 10% tax, and I guestimate about $60 shipping and handling, then I still pay about 1100 for a tool that costs 1500 over here ... isn't that a bargain?

It is one thing requesting or expecting a local agent to honour warranty and another thing altogether getting them to honour the warranty.

Most i have delt with in the past expect you to take it back to your place of purchase.

Be wary with customs and charges etc.
I've been hit with up to $220 customs, GST and broker clearance charges in the past by certain carriers like DHL etc for items a third of that price. I thinkit depends whether the seller fills out the correct paperwork or not!

I guess so long as it will fit in the overhead lockers, QANTAS would be OK with you taking it along. Probably need to leave the bar guard on - and keep the petrol in a bottle in your pocket.

If you're really serious about this I'd:
    1. ring customs and find out exactly what type of charges you'd be up for. (I believe it will be 10% GSt on the cost of item including freight as well as some other charges.
    2. drop by your local Husquvarna dealer and tell them you've got an overseas sourced saw that's still under warranty but not running and will they fix it please? (I think the answer will be "no") As I understand it, the local agent is paid by the Australian distributor for any warranty repairs ar may even return it to the distributor for inspection and repair. As the distributor hasn't sold the saw nor made any money out of it, they're hardly likely to want to fix an import.

Beware - expect nothing once you go outside Australia. Unless you get a worldwide warranty in writing the local dealer does not have to (and usually will not) do it. I've had only one occasion where I assumed world wide warranty and was correct (Gibson electric guitar), and many where I was not (SLR Canon camera - it took months to sort out and cost me $250!, JVC CD player - the agent claimed a spare parts incompatiblity). I even had it in writing that my Australian purchased Mac laptop had a worldwide warranty but when it stopped working in Belgium the local Mac agent refused to look at it until I had contacted the manufacturer and got them to put pressure on the agent. This took more than a month to get sorted - I'm sure they buggerized me around for much longer than was necessary - very frustrating.

This does not prevent me from buying from OS but where important I always ask for the warranty issue.

Yep - DHL is a doozie. For a while, $200 was their minimum charge, I got burned buying a memory card that cost half that.

You might be able to find this saw cheaper elsewhere. Surface postage from the States for a pkg weighing just under the 20 kg max weight limit is us$ 68.00. If your total cost including shipping is less than $1,000 you can get them in duty/tax free (POST ONLY)

I have been burned big time by ups, FedEx and DHL. The deal there is that they can force you to pay duty and taxes, the charge you a $75.00 'brokerage' fee on top. They don't give a toss about the taxes, the local office has simply found a way to make you give them a higher fee. I make a point to never purchase from anyone who uses couriers exclusively

What I call a "cover charge". Those Fedex b******s tried that on me on something I had to send to the US for repair as the facilities to repair the item were not available in Oz. When it was sent back they tried to stick me with a "customs clearance" charge. I rang them and after a robust conversation they agreed not to charge it in this instance, but would in the future. I told them there would be no future. From now on if people in the US don't despatch by mail I don't buy. These comapnies are getting rich from all the small buyers using the internet. Airfreight must be going through the roof. I work for Ozzie Post and we can see the volumes jumping.

Sorry Wooded I probably gave a poor example in using ebay, and like the others I doubt if a world wide warranty would apply.
