    Every time the piston of a 2-stroke motor comes up it's a compression stroke, because of the way the ports are set in the cylinder walls as it fires the piston travels down uncovering the exhaust ports first then further down the wall the intake port is uncovered allowing the last section of down-ward stroke to take in fuel-air mixture then it goes backup, fires and the cycle starts again. The top of the piston is normally ridged to help the exhaust out and the fuel-air in.

    On the Stihl English on-line manual it says;
    "Do not drop-start the engine – start as described in the Instruction Manual."
    In Australia and the USA the 660 Stihl instruction manuals have both "on", the ground and "between the legs" as recommended starting methods.

    Default Drop-starting injury

    Hi,
    Drop-starting my Husqu 268 and having it jam or stick just about put me out of the business of cutting wood. My shoulder is still messed up.
    Now I start it with my foot.

    Maybe they should put kick start levers on chainsaws

    Some of the big old pommy cylinder lawn mowers had a kick start.

    The kick start mowers were actually terrible things. They had restricted pedal travel and didn't spin the motor over far enough.

    And being British with wobbly Amal cabs and dodgy Lucas electrics it was already a losing battle.
