couldn't bring myself to do it - as one thing I've sort of found out over the years is to never buy a cheap saw... Cheap just about everything else is normally not too bad, but not in a saw...

I was with my daughter today and weakened and told her the prices going at other Bunnings. Apparantly, I'd got it wrong. She paid just under $400 for the saw and the stand combined and the stand was $99. So $298 sounds about right.
Prices seem to come down now-a-days.
I know I paid $1800 for my big Bosch SCMS.
I see on the other thread that the new articulated model is now way less than that.

That's entirely up to you mate. The purpose for this thread was not to convince others to buy one, but rather, if you are in the market for a cheap mitre saw, look at this one. It may suit you.

Not to mention safer! Remember to always go AGAINST the rotation of a power tools, you don't want the buggers catching and coming at you, eek!

This effect is more pronounced on a radial arm saw, but best to always remember.

Actually, I was in bunnings a few days after posting - with my 6 yo old son who liked it..- and thought, what the heck and bought one...

Glad I did - the main thing I like is how light it is! I can carry it around one handed, and it's great for all the floor joists and other stuff I've been doing - and it has no problem going through some very hard 100x50 90 year old hardwood...

Sure, it's not a 1212, but it I have to agree with you that for the price it is a great saw, and it is a hell of a lot easier to move around and use than a big one... So I to would recommend it.... Came with a 2 year guarantee.

    You're a trady aren't you Ian?
One thing I found about my big Bosch SCMS, apart from the fact that it's bl$%#y heavy, is that it didn't like being carried around in the back of the panel van. When a job came up where accuracy was important, I found I inevitably had the re-adjust everything back to square.

I'd be interested in hearing from you in the future when you can say how the little one comes up. My daughter has hers fixed to a table and it never moves, so hers is no good for trialing that.
With fewer moving parts, it wouldn't surprise me if it was more tolerant in this area.
    Cheers

I tend to significantly renovate a house every year or so - ie rip up floors, more walls, re do roofs, etc so it will get a fair work out (just started the new house...) but won't be in the car much... I am carrying it around everywhere, it's great to be able to carry it one handed up a ladder, and I've just beeen sliding it along the floor joists as I do them, so that I don't have to climb out of the floor cavity to get the next one cut (I'm not hand cutting them as I need exact length and 90 degrees at the ends given what they arve fitting into..).

I'll let you know how I go, but so far for a light weight saw it's been great.

Default $50 OFF MAKITA SCMS UNTIL 30th Dec

Total Tools has a catalogue special on Makita LS1018L SCMS for $449.

This is the 255mm blade, 1430 Watt, sliding, laser equipped model, which bevels 45 degrees left and right. Cutting capacity is 91mm deep x 310 mm wide, at 0 deg mitre & 0 deg bevel. It weighs 19.8 kg, which is reasonably portable.

The offer ends on 30th December, so a quick decision is needed. The price before this offer was $499 at the same store.

After following this post for a while and visiting some stores, I bought the last saw in stock at Total Tools Preston yesterday. It was the display machine so the blade angles needed realignment. Its first job will be to build a mobile table to mount it on, so that it can be moved to a corner when space is needed.

    Hey all,
Wanted to get some feedback on the Bosch 250mm 1800W SCMS on sale at Bunnies with a stand. My immediate requirements for the saw are cutting eco wood sleepers, pine edging, merbau decking etc. Do you guys feel this saw would be suitable? I am more than happy to invest $ in a setup that is going to last a long time and handle a range of jobs (I am sure I will have need in the future). I have been bitten by the cheap items before and am therefore a little cautious.

    Thanks!!
