From whom did you purchase the Makita collet?

The first one of these routers I bought had terrible runout, you didn't need to measure it once a bit was installed your eyes provided sufficient evidence. The replacement one wasn't much better. I bought a set of two collets on eBay from China that didn't even fit although they were supposed to.
Has anyone tried the collets supplied by Adam's Bits on eBay? I'm concerned that they won't be any better than the original. I suspect that you'd get something of good quality from these guys - Makita Collets Custom | 3DTEK - but if you want a few different sizes (I'd like 4) they get a bit exxy.

I bought one of these a week ago. I have used it for about 8 hours running time with no issues although I have only had a bearing round over bit in it.
i also have the 18v Makita version which is quieter and a little smoother but it is also brushless.
There was a comment in the OP from Chief Tiff about the fence being flimsy but can confirm it is all but identical to the Makita one I have.
Overall I am happy with the product to date and no regrets with the purchase

Bloody hell! That's the same manufacturer I linked to, but they're cheaper on eBay than on their own website. I hate people who do that.
Ahh, it's cheaper on their own website. The $22 I saw when it went to Derek's link was only for a 1/4" to 3mm reducer. The actual collets are cheaper on their site, $33 compared to $36.30.

I just walked into a tool shop in Carlton (which is walking distance from the CBD so I went during my lunch hour) and bought it over the counter.
I saw those, but they look identical to the ones you get with the router (same colour), so I didn't risk it. The Makita ones are matt black.
I am wondering, rather than being knock offs, whether these routers are Makita ones which have failed QA during manufacture (e.g. maybe the casting is a bit off), and rather than discard, Makita actually makes more money by off loading the rejects, whack in some cheaper electronics, and on-selling?

I believe many products are manufactured by, say a Chinese company, and that company makes more than the original order. My conjecture is that the surplus is sold off unbranded. The reason for this supposition was that many years ago, maybe around the time Triton was owned by GMC and before their demise, I found a listing that offered a router that looked exactly like the Triton. It was a different colour, that's all, and you had to buy a container load. Only saw this once, but it has stuck with me that this is could be quite commonplace with many products.

I don’t really think they are related to Makita manufactured product. It is easy for them to clone a product and manufacture it. Just look at the fake brand name sunglasses, running shoes, handbags, shirts, car parts ( there are a lot of fake car parts branded as original for sale) etc
When you look closely at the Makita and generic version there are subtle differences

The Makita collet I linked to is for CNC use. That is far more demanding than a simple round over process.

It's cheaper to buy those collets direct from their online store, saves the eBay and Paypal fees - Makita Collets Custom | 3DTEK

I have ordered one (1/4") from the store. Buying from eBay turned out to be about 50c more expensive. Cheaper price and more expensive postage. Six of one and a half dozen of the other ...

The more I hear about Ebay & Amazon the more I think would not use their services for our coming business venture. Their onerous rules and big brother watchdog style required for participation outweigh for me the reach of the system. Sorry for the off topic but the whole thing annoys me from a retailers POV.

Just a quick note at this stage. The 1/4" collet from 3DTek arrived yesterday - super quick delivery. I have not had a chance to use it. They will wait to the weekend. But I must say that the finish is really excellent. It makes the casting of the replicas on eBay look cheap and nasty. This is a precision item. Not only this, but 3DTek included a 1/8" collet, which I did not order. I assume it was a gift!
Why did I order a collet when I was praising the Chinese trim router? Well, I also since purchased the Makita version - so I have both the original and the "other" in use together. The Chinese trim router works very well. No issues ... until I used the Makita. Then I could detect - just - a very slight level of vibration in comparison to the smoothness of the Makita. And this got me thinking about the collet. I will see if I can get some time to obtain objective measurements/comparisons on the weekend.
