How do I Clean pine tree sap from electric chainsaw?
Hi all,
I'm hoping my 2000w electric chainsaw rates as a hand tool.
I've just cut back quite a few pine trees yesterday.
Super easy with the RYOBI RCS2040G - $149 at bunnings.
Bargain compared to $1000 quote.
This morning I wanted to practice mounting the chain and noticed quite a bit of pine tree sap build up and thickening/hardening.
The sap would NOT just wipe away.
Anyone have a suggestion on what chemical to use to remove the pine tree sap?
tia and all my best,
Barry G. SumpterThanks,

When we was cutting Slash pine at Kalpower we used Kerosene to clean it off things ,seemed to work ok ,we tried a few other things like petrol, metho ,but they didn't work at all ,after we finished cleaning things we used to wash our hands with soapy water and put a bit of lanolene on our hands afterwards.

Hot soapy water & a stiff brush works with fresh Hoop Pine sap, unplug the saw first.

Kerosene or Turps should clean your saw.
I don't know if electric chain saws have chain oilers, but if not, I would make sure you grease your blade before using it in the pine again and keep a can of spray on oil handy while you are working.

Hi all,
solvents can make plastics brittle or may attack surface finishes or colouring, so they are not recommended. When entering the motor of gearbox, solvents can also deteriorate the insulation lacquer of the coil copper wire, can penetrate seals and dilute lubricants. Stihl has an alternative on offer:
STIHL special cleaner | STIHL
This or a similar solution is probably sold in Oz as well.
greetings

I remember years ago buying a near new 026 saw from a contractor who'd used it for a week thinning pine before realising it was an exercise in futility.
The result? An almost new saw heavily encrusted with resin.
The remedy? An hour's elbow grease with a screwdriver (torx), a stiff degreasing brush and a liter of kerosene in an old ice cream bucket.
The result? As good as new, but at only half the price!Sycophant to nobody!

Yes, the Stihl formula is detergent-based, to comply with green ruling which forbids organic solvents. There are some additives, though, of which i don't know much about. It is probably something in the line of aromatic oils, like orange peel oil, which was found to have emulsifying properties. It could also be something like isopropyl-alcohol or some other chemical, that is used for cleaning grime and cigarette smoke stains from the plastic housings of pc's, printers and monitors.
The Stihl stuff is adequate, but it can't 100% beat white spirit or kerosine. It's easier on the plastics and paint job, though.
