Combination Jointer/Thicknesser
Well after looking at seperate machines at the wood show i figured i just don't have the space for a seperate 15" thicknesser and 8" jointer so i am now looking for a combination machine. I have around $2k to spend on this machine, would have been $3k but i bought the 3 isoloc joint templates for my leigh jig at the show. So any advice on what machine to get would be appreciated. I already have the carbatec 10" combo machine in mind but was wondering if there is something better out there.
The other little problem i might face is power. I noticed some of the bigger machines have 15amp plugs on them and all my power points in the shed are 10amp. i do have a 15amp power point in the fuse box though, great help that is. How much roughly would it cost to put about 2 x 15amp power points in the shed?

G'day John, have you done a search on the ML392 in here. There's lots of info but it's a lot cheaper than you may want to spend. All I can tell you is that for around $900 it's a good unit.
ps. Just bought a new template for the Gifkins - very happy with it.If at first you don't succeed, give something else a go. Life is far too short to waste time trying.

yea i have read all the posts about the ML392 and have it on my list. Was just wondering if there is anything better or is it much of a muchness. If i don't spend the $2k on the machine and only $900 even better, then i can spend the rest of the money on more toys

I kind of miss my gifking jig. It was so easy to use. Mind you i'm not complaining i have moved up to the Leigh jig. Still got 2 more templates to get for it, the finger jointer and the mortise and tennon, then i can sell my triton finger jointer which i have only used once and has been sitting on the shelf for over a year now.
Hmm maybe i should get the ML392 now......

The Carbatec PT-260 (also available from Timbecon and others I'm sure) is a copy of the Elektra-Beckum HC260M models (http://www.elektra-beckum.com/eb/com/en/produkte/planer_thicknessers/). I have the HC260K which has the cabinet base and I've had it for about 6 years. The clone is only $995. The EB was $2200 when I bought it. It is adequate for the needs of the weekend wood butcher such as myself.
I have two complaints:
1. Longer tables would be great.
2. The fence is not a great design and a bit flimsy.
The euro guard design is good.
There isn't much around in the second hand market but if you're patient you can be lucky. There are two for sale at http://www.usedmachineryptyltd.com (Look under combination machines. No affiliation etc) but they are 3 phase. However, you may actually have 3 phase power without knowing it if you have an older home. I know I do.
BTW, call these folks. They do not seem to be getting their own e-mail.
