    Default Compressors

What's the relative merits of Belted Vs Direct Drive, Oil-less Vs other.
I have followed the thread on GMC compressors.
I would want a compressor that can be used for applications of shellac, say to a 2.4m X 1.0m table top, also for general use around the work-shop.
How necessary is a water "trap"
    Any other advice ?
Size of tank, CFM req's ??
Any useful sites for providing above info ?
    Thanks

Direct drive compressors are generally lighter and faster revving than a belt drive and therefore generally likely to fail earlier. If the motor burns out you need to either get it replaced with an original spare part or rewound, neither of which are generally economically viable. Oilless compressors are generally very small units that are non serviceable (read disposable). A water trap is neccessary unless all you want to do is blow up balloons and air mattresses! You dont want water (or dirty oil) in your: lacquer; paint; nail gun; sander; tyres etc etc. I would say the bare minimum requirements for spraying (using a gun that has very low air consumption) is 8cfm, 60L tank and a good quality water trap. If you live in a high humidity area and/or are spraying in cold conditions you may want/need to have a coil of 1/2" copper tubing between the tank and the trap. This allows the air to cool before it reaches the trap, precipitating out more moisture.
