If its oil free its most likely a diaphragm type which don't live very long.
You'd probably be far better off with a 2hp GMC from bunnings at about $95

If you are in the market for a compressor then grab this weeks Super Cheap catalogue, for a dollar extra you get the nail gun and staple gun set.

Oh you mean the one that's been designed to sell to housewives.

Its an upright plastic looking thing.... yeh looks like an upright vacume cleaner.

I recon you could park one in the corner of a school office for blowing up balls or something equaly girly.

but for real use there is a lot better value and practicality available.

I baught one of the $150 super cheap specials as a second machine.
I'm not going to run an air drill off it all day... but for a bit of portable air... its just fine.

Buy a better filter reg and some nito fittings though.

Yep, was one at the local shop too. Was chatting about it and the fact that it was a useless piece of crap that one customer had already returned.

Don't buy it. You need atleast 40 ltrs to do any type of spraying. 3ltr capacity would only be good for a stapler. Far better off with the 2hp 40 ltr jobs getting around. There are plenty of them out there and you will normally get a good deal on air tools to go with it.

Thanks lads for all your replies. I went to Supercheap & Bunnings as a result of the advice given here. I looked at the Eagle red & blue compressor(s) as well as the GMC @ Bunnies. Whilst there I bought myself a GMC bandsaw with a stand for $199. I asked the assistant if I could purchase additional blades for the machine but he said not there. But he said I could get them made up cheaper and even get a blade to cut thin gauge materials from elsewhere - next time I am in there I will ask him where somewhere is.

Thanks Blackhole for the deal available at Supercheap Auto, I am thinking of buying the same one as you Soundman - I presume it is the yellow one Soundman as shown in the attachment? Why do you suggest in buying a better filter reg and some nito fittings? Remember I know bugger all about compressors (and most things in life). The larger blue coloured one in the attachment is going for $399 and I notice it has a belt drive. Does this mean it is quieter or a better machine than the yellow one. I am procastinating whether (if in the long term) it is worth paying the extra $250 - as I said previously I don't plan on paint spraying or use air tools in the foreseeable future.

Btw Blackhole the extra tools are worth $150 alone so I suppose any of the compressors are a bargain. I just noticed on EBay that someone is selling the Eagle Red for $30 more than Bunnings does and another person is selling the yellow coloured compressor (accessories and tubing) for $180 more than you can buy at Supacheap. I wouldn't be surprised to find that someone will buy them for that price.

firstly the filter grgulators on alll these cheap machines leave quite a bit to be desired.

in fact most of them have a regulator only with no filter/water trap.

the filter/reg is waht gives you consistent air preasure and clean air.


no I think I baught the cheapest machine that supercheap had, promarily because I wanted small... but cheap was good too.

this machine I think is better than another machine sold bu others that looks quite a bit different around the air outlet arrangements.
In this price point there seem to be two different machines offered...with many different badges.

You might consider the next one up.... but once you get past that point.... like $300 give some thaught about a cheapr compressor from a proper tool shop like trade tools or glenfords.

A whole pile of cheap accessories realy arent worth it... the fittings wont be good or standard and the other bits will be crap.

Good air hose is reasonably cheap... like $1-2 a meter from the right place.
arround here eveybody uses Nitto fittings....... real nittos are damn good..... there are some very good coppies and thers is some real crap.
to start with 2 x 5 metre lengths of hose will be handy.
get a nitto female for the compressor and two line males and females for the hoses
I recon to run the new filter reg on quick connect fittings so you can do stuff with it or leave it out for non critical stuff.

then buy a male fitting whenever you buy a tool.... a lot of tools now come with one supplied.


If you were in QLD i would say go and look at the cheqper trade tools machines...... you need to go and look at a real tool shop.

you should have glenfords down there as well as hare & forbes.

If you want cheap and chearfull they don't get much cheaper than the $100 supercheap.

BTW waht do you want to do with it.

Bunnings or supercheap is the best buy for a cheap compressor

I bought a 50 litre direct drive compressor and wished I hadn't. Its replacement is a belt drive 3 cyl machine. That $399 blue one you are considering: what are the specs? How many HP? How many cfm - 1) Capacity and 2) Free air. The direct drive ones are Ok for staplers etc and blowing dust - but for spraying you need minimum 10 cfm free air delivery - else it gets tricky...

I was in supercheap today.

seems they are lifting their game with compressors.... a little.

anyway the little one is the one I baught,
the next one up would probaly be a worthwhile upgrade
I stand by the shop arround real tool shops once you spend over $300.

seems you get some sort of accessory pack with the compressor and you get the stapler kiy for the extra$1.
the accessory pack contains some nitto style fittings.

yeh it looks to be a good deal for some "cheap chineese crackers"

of course there aren't all the fittings one would like in the accessory pack.

I note that they had two different fitted hoses... a cheapy and a cheap nylex.

both arround the 10m..... which is a painfull length... better cut in half.... but its one way to buy hose cheap.
