Thread: Dovetail saws

You know what you are getting with a LN or Aria, both superb saws. The problem with the Pax, etc is that they can be hit-and-miss. The closest thing I have to the latter is a Crown gent, and this has been fine out of the box. I do have and like the LN but, frankly, as beautiful as it is to look at, I have other saws that I prefer to use. This is a personal thing. A good vintage saw that is tuned well can do as well - just will not necessarily look as pretty.

Get the LN (or Aria - available from HNT Gordon) because you like it. Don't get a second-best saw because it is easier. You will regret it later.

What about a Japanese back saw?

Nothing like trying something new!

Gazahly, iwas just about to post the same thing, i have used Jap saws this year more than any other saw in my Apprentiship, and i love them, i have the same control as any other saw, but the cut is finer, and faster.

Thanks guys, I have a Japanese back saw already, dont like it much. Mostly its just a personal thing - but one thing about Japanese saws I dislike is that they are largely ballistic, in the sense that once the cut starts it cannot be redirected effectively. With a European back saw you can change direction and salvage a cut running off course.

I like the Jap back saws for crosscuting small jobs, but for dovetailing, go for a dovetail saw. Haven't used either LN or Aria (made my own) but would expect that either would be excellent. There was a comparison in AWR a few issues ago.

I looked at both the LN and the Adria at the last WW show in Brisbane. Just felt that the handle on Adria was a little smaller. If you have larger hands maybe the LN is the go.
