Drill Doctor
Any opinions experiences appreciated on the Drill Doctor unit. I now have about the equivalent value in blunt drills - hand sharpening seems to be too difficult for me - what to do? Appreciate any feedback

I have one that I acquired cheaply. It is a very good unit and does everything it says it can if you are careful with aligning the splines.
I don't think I'd pay full price unless I was sharpening 10 or so bits a week (minimum). You might want to use a good white grinding wheel and a jig instead, or get a service to do them for you. The money you spend on the Drill Dr will buy a lot of drill bits (eg a good metric set of Sutton drills will cost about $90).

Drill Doctor
Thanks so much for the quick response.
$29 for the Carbatec sounds like a bargain Have tried other bargains without success Can anyone advise from their own experience how good this one is?

Barry,
I have a Drill Doctor. It is simplicity itself to use and does a superb job. I believe that the Martek drill sharpener works on a very similar principle to the Drill Doctor - may even be a bit more versatile with the angles it enables you to sharpen at.
Cheers

Barry,
I use the DD 250. It is a 110V unit and I use it with a stepdown transformer.
The Martek is driven by the power of a drill. It is available from Lee Valley and if you are patient you can can get one with very little freight cost through the special combined order from Lee Valley that is presently being arranged by other members of this forum.

Drill Doctor DD400
Hi All
I bought the DD400 kit in WA for about 315.00 and it is great. I can sharpen drills up to 3/4" with such ease. I even keep all broken bits now because it is so simple to sharpen them. Once the money is spent and forgotten it is great to be able to just sharpen a bit when needed.

I dont have any time for those drill sharpening thingies I have never seen one that works a dam.
My suggestion would be to go to an engineering workshop askt them who sharpens their drills Thet will answer We Do so then ask them to sho you how it is done. Give them a Slab and go home and sharpen all your drills.
Helps if you buy a Multitool Linisher attachment too.
Now if they made a tool to sharpen Brad point drills that would be something.
