Dumb questions about dust collector
I have a 1hp budget DC from Carbatec which came with about 1.5m of 4" hose. The hose was too short and awkward to move from machine to machine, so I got a longer piece- 4m.
I think that maybe this is too long for the DC as when using the jointer chips are coming out the top as well as into the bag.
I assume this is why the planed surface does not look as good as it should with small marks/depressions (maybe 12mm x 5mm) randomly across the face- I feel that these may be where a chip gets caught between the blade and the face.
Does this make sense?
If so, what is the max length of hose that I should consider for a 1hp DC?
Also, at what point should the bag be emptied, is it Ok to let it fill up to say 75%

You wouldn't be getting chips caught between the blades and the wood, but they're probably winding up on the surface and then the outfeed roller is running over them. Could certainly be the result of a lack of suction from your DC, but 1.5m vs 4m shouldn't really make that much of a difference.
Flex hose has corrugations on the inside, which causes turbulence, which results in less effective suction. Using PVC pipe is a better idea - 4" for a 1hp DC is usually OK, 90mm is a little small. Failing that try with the short hose and see what happens.
Check your top bag though - if it's blocked up suction is going to be badly affected. I usually wind up filling my DC to the point of overflowing With a 1hp though, with the fan so close to the bag, you can wind up with it so full it overwhelms the fan and doesn't work so goodThe Australian Woodworkers Database - over 3,500 Aussie Woods listed: http://www.aussiewoods.info/

There most certainly is a big difference between 1m of corigated hose & 4m. this stuff is very lossy.
also jointers & thicknessers are one of the bigest generators of waste material.
a combination where you need every thing going for you.
The 1hp machine is probably a little small but if you reduce the amount of hose and empty the bag early you might solve your problem.
get the extractor right next to the machine & use the shortest posible length of hose and keep the hose as straight as possible with the smoothest & as few bends as possible.
& if all else fails take lighter cuts.
