    Default Dust from SCMS

I recently received a Makita LS1018L SCMS for my birthday (lucky me) which is a great machine for DIYing around the home. The problem I have at the moment is dust - the mahine rips through timber with great ease but creates a cloud of dust with equal ease.

I currently have an el-cheapo bagless vacuum (about $40 worth) attached to the dust nozzle. It seems to give pretty good suction and it fits tightly but I still have lots of dust going everywhere. i am looking for a better solution but don't have much cash ($200 limit for this problem).

    My questions are:
    1. Would a dust extraction system like the carbatec 1hp unit (Carba-Tec® 1hp Economy Extractor : CARBA-TEC) give a better result or will there always be a large amount of dust unless I invest in a $500 unit/hood system? I am concerned that a $200 investment will not make much of a difference.

    2. Have people had success using wet/dry vacuums to help eliminate dust eg RYOBI 20L we/dry vac: Ryobi - 20L Wet & Dry Workshop Vac (Stainless Steel)

    3. Am I just wishing for too much from this machine?

You'll get better results from a shop vac than a dust extraction system. I have a vac hooked up to mine and it helps a little bit. If you have your saw in one location at all times you can make a box that surrounds the saw. This way the dust is kept in one area and every few weeks you can dust it up.

    Check out the link below.

Neither of those systems will capture and remove the dangerous invisible dust.

A Vacuum cleaner will grab more visible dust but does not have enough volume flow to catch the invisible stiff. A small DC will catch little of either but if you set it up so that it vents outside the shed and leave it running continuously while cutting and for 15-20 minutes after your last cut you will reduced your exposure to invisible dust. A vacuum cleaner has too low an air flow to clear a shed ,not to mention the horrible noise they make. Remember the visible dust doesn't hurt but the invisible dust will.

The only way to effectively remove the invisible dust at source (so as little as possible enters a shed ) from something like a a SCMS is using at least a 1000 CFM at 4000 FPM system (see Bill's Cyclone Dust Collection Research - Home Page). This is REAL 1000 CFM @ 4000 FPM and not what 90% of manufacturers claim.

Thanks for the links - will check out some of those other threads and might experiment with a simple hood with a vac attached.
