Thread: The Eagle has landed!

The Eagle has landed!
The day has finally arrived, the new table saw is in the shed!
So, what did I finish up buying, well this one.
After looking at more test reports, spec sheets and other information on table saws, I finally decided that what I wanted/needed
was:
left tilting 10" blade
Looked at several 12" saws, but decided that the extra max. cutting height didn't warrant the extra expense, also was much harder to find a
left tilting blade
3 hp motor
Even though a lot of people are very keen on the Jet Supersaw, I had doubts about its' power. Some people said that wasn't a problem
but when I read a post from one forumite, who otherwise was lavish in his praise of the Supersaw, that he was upgrading his motor to 3hp
I decided that the Supersaw was out.
Max rip width of at least 1200mm
This eliminated quite a few saws, including the TSC10HB, which in any was also eliminated because it tilts right
In the end end it wa down to 2 tablesaws, the Jet JTAS0XL with 50" fence and the Carbatec TS10L. The list price of both saws is roughly the same and everything being equal the Jet would win (on paper). This is where my frustration really started.
The Vic Jet dealer did not stock the Jet JTAS10XL, and in any case only brings them in in a right tilt version! I put in an enquiry to them and after 2 or days they finally came back to me saying they had found a left tilting one, but it was an old blue model, price was $2300.
As I didn't want to buy a superseded model, nor wanted to buy an unseen tablesaw, the hunt continued.
One forumite, bfx, had previously posted about the Carbatec TS10L and suggested that I come and have a look at this saw.
As he only lives about 20k down the road, I did, and immediately knew I had found my tablesaw!
However more frustration, Carbatec had decided to stop stocking this tablesaw as the price ($2795) was not competative with the likes of the TSC10HB and was indeed the same as the 12" equivalent. They sold their remaining stock in Melbourne at $1795, an absolute steal and I did indeed try to get one of these but was too late, all sold out.
They told me there were none left in the country, and no more coming in.
Being stubborn by nature, and really wanting this saw, I decided to ring C/tec Brisbane, and to my surprise found that they had 2 left, 1 on the floor and 1 still packed up. They had sold the other remaining stock at $1995. They offered to sell me the packed up one at $1995 plus freight to Bendigo ($160).
When I mentioned that Melbourne had sold them below this, and that I would prefer it freighted to Melbourne (I have no way to get a 200kg+ saw off a truck!), they offered to sell it for $1995 delivered to Melbourne. Deal done, Visa card took a massive hit!
It took a while to get here, but it arrived in Melbourne yesterday, and I picked it up today.
Happy as a pig in sh*t, will post pictures tomorrow and show a WIP of the making of the mobile base etc.
It is basically a PM2000 clone, has the same riving knife setup as well as the locking arbor for easy blade changes, beautifully machined table and a brilliant fence.
As a footnote, Carbatec told me they have now decided to stock these saws again and the new price will probably be $1995!

G'day Big Shed,
You lucky bugger finding that saw. Guess I got told a dud when I was told that C/T Melb had shipped their last two saws to C/T Brisbane and there were none left in the whole brown land.
Have fun setting it up. Still haven't done anything with my 10HB yet except a few test runs - this Saturday will change that.
Now all we need is some t/saw and shed pawn from you.
Onya for perseverance.

Fred, nice pick up. Build a side extension table and it will look a lot like the JTAS.
Have fun getting it all up and running and good luck building all your new jigs.

Fred,
I prefer to think of the PM2000 as the clone.
Enjoy the experience of opening the boxes and setting it up. As you know, mine was pretty much true straight out of the box.
I was at Carbatec yesterday picking up a drill press - you said I needed one for the kitchen door hinges and that was sufficient to convince her indoors. This system of using you as an authority on equipment requirements is working well for me at the moment although she was wondering how it was that I bought the TS-10L before you.
Regards
Bill

Too cold in the shed at this time of the morning
Apart from that I'm playing with my other new toy, my notebook decided to die a couple of days ago, picked up another one while I was in Melbourne and am busily loading software tonight.
Tomorrow, I will take some pics, unpack some of the bits, then go get some steel for the mobile base. Will need to get my mate down with his little hydraulic lifter on the back of the ute to get the monster off the trailer.

Waldo, almost suffered your fate when I picked it up from Carbatec. They loaded 4 boxes into the trailer, but none seemed long enough to hold the fence rails (about 2200mm). Whn I asked where the fence rails were, got some blank looks but they finally found them.
Let's hope the rest is all there.
