Default How to open up and fix a jumping Wixey

My Wixey angle finder has been most temperamental in the last few months to the point where it was unusable. It would work for a couple of minutes and then just when one needed to take a final critical measurement the reading would jump around all over the place.

I tried to pry it apart but I could not get it to do so so I purchased another and then it did not matter what I did with the old one.

To open up the Wixey requires the front sticky silver cover be peeled back at the top and bottom. Peel the cover back enough just to exposed the 4 Phillips head screws shown at the red dots on this picture. Try not to stretch the sticky cover too much.

Once you have the screws out the whole thing comes apart exposing the gizzards. Take care of the thin rubber gaskets as you will need to reuse them

Then I blew it the innards out with a bit of compressed air with the nozzle held back 200 mm of so.

Then reassemble in the reverse direction. My silver cover does not sit down perfectly over the top but it still works. If it is not completely sealed you will have to keep it out of the dust.

Why the heck they didn't make it easier to do this is beyond me.

I think you may have answered your own question Bob.
So did blowing the dust out fix it?
Those were the droids I was looking for.

Yep - it sure did. I have to admit I have been using the Wixey in pretty harsh environments as I was using it to measure (and then remove) the twist in my log milling rails. So lots of sawdust around. It's a very well sealed unit but somehow some dust must have got in there.
