GMC 305 Slide Compound Mitre Saw
Hi Guys, I'm wanting to buy my first ever mitre saw. I've been using my neighbours Ryobi 210mm for a while and its time i want to give it back and but my own.
Does anyone have any opinions on the 305 gmc mite saw. I find the price ($499) quite reasonable for a 'Learner DIY' person like myself. My neighbours saw was a little small when i was cutting my 125mm cypress post and i guess generally i wouldn't be cutting that size all the time but is it worth gettting the bigger 305 rather than a 254mm and having to do double cuts on the bigger stuff?
Thanks

It depends on what you're doing. If your work requires dead accurate cuts - eg. 45° mitres for picture frames, or compound mitres - then a GMC isn't the best choice.
On the other hand, if the bulk of your work is framing, then the GMC is perfectly OK. I'm quite happy with mine; my SCMS burnt out halfway through framing a house, so I bought a GMC 305 to finish, expecting to bin it at the end of the job. It's still working fine a few years later...
As to the size, well... don't forget the bigger blades cost more, so unless you're cutting larger pieces fairly regularly then you're paying a premium just to avoid an occasional double cut. Then again, the wallet only notices it when you replace the blade and it is nice to have a big saw.

There's also a school of thought that say's 305mm blades arn't as acurate as say 255 because of blade wobble and unless you change the blade to a decent one(very expensive) then the fact its a gmc could make it even worse. So if acuracy is a concern then this may be an issue.
I work day in day out with my 255 on the building site and i find it more than sufficiant. I realise this doesnt really answer your gmc question but hope it helps
