Call me old-fashioned, but I would expect it to WORK. At least for five minutes or so, surely not too unreasonable an ask.
60 bucks is 60 bucks and I am sure that nowhere on the box does it state that "this product will not spin a router bit against thin air straight out of the box".
I think even GMC would agree with that.

I don't think they deliberately make routers that don't work.
A simple call to GMC will probably earn you a replacement without any hassles if you explain the problem. How much wood could the woodchuck chuck if the woodchuck could chuck wood?

That the router did not work straight out of the box is not very good but to say it has put you of GMC for good is IMHO ridiculous.
Couple of years ago I bought a wellknown brand of VCR and TV which broke down THREE days after I got it. Whilst the retailer was very helpful it took two month to get them repaired under warranty as some parts were not in stock in Australia. It only took two months because after one month I had already reached the stage that I was using a solicitor to get action.
Compare that to GMC warranty 30 days refund if you don't like it and two years replacement warranty- no questions asked even if it was your own fault that it broke.
BTW I have seven GMC tools and only one developed a minor fault. Swapped over by Bunnings even though I had lost the receipt. Still a satisfied customer.
Peter.

Hmm. I haven't had a chance to take mine back yet. Studee and Dean have convinced me to try a swap over instead of a full refund. I'd rather get one that works than just get my money back but I won't have much of a sense of humour if I get yet another dud. I think I'll try and test the replacement in the store before I leave. Will report back to the forum on my experience.
BTW, I agree with Geno in response to Goldy's comment. Although it was only $60 it WAS on sale at half normal price. For any price a power tool should work as described, at least initially. I don't put any stock in the "lifetime guarantee" label some manufacturers put on their products, either, so if it dies in 24 month's time I'd personally consider it a good bargain. This time, we didn't forget the gravy.

GMC
I also have several GMC brand tools with very little problem. Recently purchased a 14.4 volt cordless which had a charger problem. Took it back to Bunnings and rather than replacing the charger they replaced the whole shooting match on the spot, no questions asked. This is not just Bunnings policy, it is the way GMC want them to do it.
Sure it's frustrating to have this happen but it's not the end of the world just take the faulty product back and any reputable retailer will exchange it with no fuss or bother.

Well I rang up a few days ago to find out where my routers were and was informed that they'd run out and couldn't fill my order. It was suggested that I ring up within a week of placing an order to check if it had been filled because if it had not been filled they would ring around to all their stores to try to fill the order!!!??? I would've thought that they would try to fill my order without me having to prompt them to do so. Poor service:mad: So I guess I'll never know the joys or frustrations of GMC ownership after all.

This sounds like a strange process. I would have thought that if the items were not available from the supplier the store would automatically sound out their other branches. Who did you order them through?

Bob, I rang the 1300 number for orders shown on the web page. Very poor service indeed!

I generally adopt the "concrete"* garantee with most of the cheaper tools I purchase..
* the garantee is null and void once you step of off the concrete!I try and do new things twice.. the first time to see if I can do it.. the second time to see if I like it

GMC router
Hi, sorry to hear you got a bum steer. It puts me off if I get a duff product regardless of who made it. I have a GMC router 1500 watt with case and 40 bit all for the low low price of $199. My wife bought it fo me from Mazzegas in Armadale. I have had not a peep of trouble from it. It has a soft start variable speed and a good depth gage. My its only failng is the stiff plunge spring. I dont expect it to last as long as the Makita it replaced but for the money who cares!!
