Ian, the filter clogs very quickly and there is no bag, just the bucket.
Sean, I shall seek out a pleated filter or check your washing line
Groggy, I have thought about a big thick foam sausage to go over the filter, I used to have one as a pre cleaner on a car air filter when we used to rally drive in dusty conditions (as opposed to muddy).
I am still going to try to modify the dust bucket and I hate the idea of 3 metres of hose from the vac coupling to the bucket then another 2 metres to the tool, if it wasn't a special fitting on the vac I could shorten it but I do like to use the brush for the floor.Stupidity kills. Absolute stupidity kills absolutely.

I know the members pooh-pooh my dodgy bucket, but it's light enough to drag around while vacuuming. So I just use it all the time with an old vacuum cleaner hose out one end shoved into the floor sweep attachment from the shop vac, and don't worry about the filter in the vac.

Tex B - Is correct in that the filter in the bucket does work and the vax cannister will be useful for a long time instead having to clean the blocked filter even though there is very little stuff below.

Bear in mind that I don't have a ROC 50 Vac, nor have I seen one, but it sounds as though your problem has a lot to do with very fine dust, or dust of a particular size, clogging the filter.
If so, catching the big stuff may not be as effective as changing the filter to one that lets the very fine stuff through (not a good idea me thinks) or to one where the pore size is small enough that the stuff currently clogging the filter, while caught by the filter, doesn't clog the pores — I think Goretex meets this criteria, the pores are so small that dust wont get stuck in the pores.
