I hesitate...
I am contemplating the purchase of a Mirka Orbital Sander but I hesitate between the DEOS with a rectangular pad or the DEROS with a circular one. I am leaning toward the DEOS because of its height of only 100mm.
The sanding area of the DEROS is approx 1.6x larger than the DEOS's but, being circular, will not sand inside corners. Are there other major differences/features between the two that I should consider in making a choice?
All views and suggestions will be gratefully received!!!
Cheers Yvan

Random orbits will always give a better finish-However inside corners obviously will not work - nor will the old school rectangular ones ( the spiral scratches are always there) -could be done with the (multi tools) with the triangular sanding plate. If you can design out the issue -might be the best option - ie sand the corner before the parts are together?

I'm in a similar boat looking at the Mirka Deros. My question to go along with this thread is which is the best orbit size for most general use and also suitable for finishing? They have the 2.5mm, 5.0mm and 8.0mm but I would expect the 8mm to be out of the question for finishing.
Have you found a good supplier yet Yvan?Dallas

5mm orbit is the best for general use.
As for getting into corners...sand before assembly and mask anywhere you think you'll get glue squeezeout.
See if you can get a CEROS instead of a DEROS, still round but much more compact. They're kinda discontinued, but apparently you can still get them if you ask How good is Festool Dust Collection

As ElanJ says, the CEROS are discontinued Mirka CEROS 650CV 150mm Central Vacuum Orbit 5,0 Although they are good I’d be reluctant to buy a discontinued line even though they say spares will be available for many years to come.
I’ve seen the MIRKA DEROS 5650CV 125/150MM IN YELLOW CASE for $1065 locally. This wasn’t an exhaustive search, though. Why the local price is more than $300 above the price to buy it from the UK (inclusive of GST and shipping) is one of those great mysteries.

I take your point with sanding before assembling! What attracts me to the DEOS is the height, only 100mm. Very handy!
Treecycle
No supplier yet but I noticed that Axminster sells the DEOS in a systainer and includes packs of Abranet sheets in various grits.
Will try to find out more about the CEROS and where it is still available. Thank you for all the comments .

Is it feasible to run normal sanding discs on the ROS or can you only use the mesh discs. I understand that dust extraction would be far inferior with normal discs.

No single sander will ever be enough. Nevertheless, for me it's glaringly obvious that I use Randos the most. I have both 8mm & 5mm DEROS, & generally only use the former for the type of tasks that were formerly undertaken by my (now disposed-of) Rotex 150: i.e. rougher, tougher, less appearance-dependent roles, such as paint & finish stripping, flattening glue-ups etc.
It's not as fast as a Rotex type tool in forced-rotation mode, but the weight difference, handling ergonomics, smoothness of operation & dust extraction more than compensate for any minor abrasive deficiencies.
Nevertheless, the 5 mm DEROS seems to be getting the most use in my hands, as a type of general purpose machine that's well suited to a variety of roles. The 8 mm DEROS is used principally with heavier gritted abrasives (Abranet Ace & HD) in 40 & 60 Grit count, whereas the 5 mm DEROS is maybe more suited to 80 - 320 grit operation. I compensate for the lack of a fine finisher such as a DEROS 2.5 mm by using finer gritted mesh & by using the DEOS orbitals for finishing & intermediate (in between coats) tasks.
I also had both sizes of DEOS too, but the larger (70 x 200?? mm) one was given away as it was more of a specialist plasterer's pad size, & thus fairly redundant for me. So I now have a smaller (80 x 133 mm) DEOS, wjhich whith a 3mm orbit is at the same time a much more aggressive (by a noticeable 20%) orbital, yet also eminently suited as a finisher & intermediate paint sander with 320 grit mesh.
I've also since purchased a "cloned" DEOS Delta orbital, made in Finland b Mirka but marketed as a (Dutch) Delmeq. It's indistinguishable from the Mirka equivalent save for having a fixed power cable & less expensive pricing. Having a similar 3 mm orbit to the rest of the DEOS sanders, & a larger Steam-iron shaped platen, it would theoretically be suitable as an alternative sander to its smaller rectangular platenned DEOS sister. You have the best of both worlds: a pointed platen "front" for internal corners, & a wide rear for faster coverage. Given the near-ideal compact dimensions & light weight, all Mirka sanders are almost as easily used either forwards or backwards, the major limitation being the offset electronics module & power cable entry contacting vertical surfaces when used backwards.
I'm personally delighted with my 4 sanders. They seem to ideally complement each other with a versatile range of aggression, finesse, accessibility & at least a modicum of commonality of pads, mesh abrasives, parts & a reliable servicing network.
A starter package of a DEROS 5 mm x 150 mm with a DEOS 80 x 133 mm would be an excellent introduction to the finest sanding system on the market.

I purchased this set a couple of years ago. It wasn't cheap: about $1400 odd from memory + $100-ish for freight & $150odd for Greedy Scumbag Tax/Duty. Mine came bundled with an additional 8 boxes of assorted Abranet, which unfortunately seems to be missing from this particular deal. You might be able to buy better direct from a continental dealer perhaps? Let your keyboard do some snooping around the German or British retail scene....Sycophant to nobody!
