Default Hold Down Clamps for Miter Saw

I have a Dewalt DW713 Compound Miter Saw. Sometimes I have the need to cut smallish bits of wood and do not feel very comfortable (safe) when doing this sort of work.

Dewalt used to have hold down clamps for this product, DW7082 which was replaced by 153650-00. It looks like this Dewalt clamp.jpg However they are unavailable in Oz from Dewalt and in the US cost US$120+ for a pair. So by the time the conversion is done and freight is paid, they work out at close to $200 Aust for the pair.

Does anyone know if there is a generic clamp, or a clamp from a different brand that will fit the DW713?

Also, does anyone have any tips on how to make my own clamps (simply) please.
    Cheers
    Ric

I'm sure there are commercial versions of these bench type dogs available - sorry, can't recall where I have come across them but I have made similar which are not as simple a design but they do work.

    Just a thought.

Looks very easy to make, a knob, piece of solid bar, drill and tap, plain rod to suit the mounting hole on saw, I guess about $25-00 for a pair

Easy, Im sure you know someone with a tap and die set

What if you ask the question in the metal working section, with a detailed drawing I'm sure there would be someone to volunteer to help you out. For a few dollars someone there would do them for you
    Just do it!

    Kind regards Rod

Depending on the fence for your saw you could jimmy up something like this:

That's on a Festool saw which has a couple of holes in the (slide-able) fence to make use of. They REALLY clamp the job.

It sounds like a custom solution may be the way to go. Looking at the Dewalt hold down it appears that the vertical force would need to be applied some distance away from the fence. This may impact on the size of the timber that it is able to hold, particularly the small pieces that you are after. The Dewalt hold down looks similar to the one that came standard with mine, which is ok if you are cutting studs (90x45) but not great for anything closer to the fence.

All that being said however it would all depend on how the hold down attaches to the fence.

I got a couple of those hold down clamps with my bosch saws. . Maybe try your local bosch dealer and see if they fit your saw?

Thanks for the responses. There are some good suggestions and I will think about them over the next few days.

I received an SMS from Dewalt today that stated the Dewalt 630065-00 will fit the DW 713. http://www.amazon.com/Dewalt-DW718-D.../dp/B00EXTRMEG

Interesting as that clamp only lists 3 models of compatible saws, all of them the sliding variety. I rang the guy and he assured me they will fit. But then why aren't any of the non sliding saws listed as compatible?

New info.... I just checked the link above and read the whole page. (When all else fails, RTFM.) The good news is that users confirmed this clamp will work on my model. So now I have the option of making my own or buying a couple of these clamps.

Maybe this is a suitable option for the same item. It says they ship worldwide but I'm not sure what they charge.

Torb I only have a cheap GMC SCMS which only has one clamp. I made the 2nd shaft and am going to make the clamp section out of an old push bike peddle the one I will be using is a cast type these were fitted with a cotter pin to stop them coming off (I sheered many a pin) Threaded rod from Big Green shed a turned knob and a flat washer will be fitted to the base.

Edited for me its a round tuit job and I need to get round tuit soon

You could also use the newer alloy crank various lengths about of those.
