Induction Motor Vs. Universal
I've done a search on this BB to learn more about the pros and cons of induction motors - not much help here.
There is heaps of info on the Net, but most of it is too technical for this layman.
I'm thinking of purchasing a benchsaw with a 3hp single phase induction motor. So here are my questions:
What is an induction motor?
What are its advantages / disadvantages?
Are they power consumption efficient?
If this type of motor is a cheap alternative, cheap in comparison to what?
Please answer in terminology that can be understood - I'm not looking for an engineering treatise.Last edited by DPB; 2nd September 2003 at 11:16 AM.

G'day DPB, from an ex RAAF electrician mate....
Induction motors run on electro-magnetic induction, not brushes.
A physically larger motor is required to achieve the same HP and consume approx 5% more power. However the wear rate is considerably less than a brush type.
They are slightly more expensive to make but they last much longer. The main thing that wears are the bearings which may need replacing every 20 or so years in heavy use but in a table saw probably never.
Also as you probably know they are much quieter.
Are you looking at the TSC-10HB (I vaguely remember a previous thread on table saws) or a different machine now.

Thanks, Mate.
I'm still doing research on upgrading my table saw. Considering the MBS300 or equivelant.

It seems to be a popular choice but is out of my league $$ wise. I am waiting for a bloke to make an offer on my bike which I no longer use then its party time.
However as this may be my one chance to fully equip my workshop I will have to spread the $$$ around a bit. A jointer, thicknesser, band saw, table saw and mortiscer are all on the list of wants/needs so the TSC-10HB is high on the list. Would love a Unisaw though.... sigh!!!
