    Default "Instant on" Master/Slave 240V Power switch

    I have bought a 10amp master/slave switch (see link below) suitable for woodworking due to it's ability to instantly switch on the slave device. What's more, it also delays turning off the slave power making it perfect for vacuums attached to power tools. It seems as good as my Festool CT-36 in terms of switch on and off times. The specs quote power being switched to the slave unit within 20 nanoseconds of switching the master on.

    I couldn't find specs for those. Do they also switch on instantly and delay switching off?

    Default old issue revisited

    I am looking to use a master/slave setup but have struck a problem. My Dust extractor has one of those on/off switches which can't be re-activated once the power is cut off at the switch. The Green (on ) button must be pressed again. I guess for any system to work I have to bypass the standard on/off switch? All ideas apprreciated. Thanks

    I generally advise against connecting any DC into master/slave setups unless a significant and variable delay can be easily made to the OFF setting. This is because unless you are using a turbo fan from a jet airliner dust will escape at source and hang around your shed for hours after it is made. One of the best uses for a DC is as a general scrubber of dust from a shed after any dust making activity.

    The length of delay or the amount of time the DC should be left on after any dust making activity depends on things like;
    - type of activity and machine used
    - length of time it has been making dust
    - flow rate of the DC.

    For example a few cross cuts with a table saw means leaving the DC on for a few minutes after making the cuts, compared to say using a big belt sander for 1/2 hour when a medium sized DC should be left on for at least 10 minutes after finishing sanding.

    Yes it is expensive to run these machines but that is the only way to keep a lid on dust levels.

    Default Wireless option

    Thanks for that BobL. I should have mentioned that my best option is a pretend Master /slave version. i.e a plug in remote (wireless)mains device . This would also give me the chance to leave the DC on as long as necessary. The main purpose is to stop me being lazy from across the room!!

    Mumbo, you haven't indicated what machine/tool you want to use as a master unit. But be aware that a master/slave powerboard style unit will be of limited use unless you want a vac switched with a hand sander. The power board style units have a 10A total rating (master and slave units) and are not good at coping with a combination of high demand tool (1.5HP plus table saw, thicknesser, router) and an effective (2HP plus) dusty, or typical 1000+W vac starting simultaneously. Once you start getting into these power levels, the units really need to be running on seperate power circuits, or seperate phases of a 3 phase instalation.
    I used to be an engineer, I'm not an engineer any more, but on the really good days I can remember when I was.

    Sorry guys...I did mislead you a bit because I've given up on the Master /slave concept after reading some of the posts here and elsewhere. I'm going for these new fangled gadgets which allow you to remotely switch a powerpoint on from a tv style remote control. My idea is that i can start the DC from near my power saw or other tool by using the remote control. I would then simply turn my saw, or whatever on manually after starting the DC . This would allow me to leave it on for as long as it makes sense. The only issue is that the Start/stop switch fitted to my DC unit does not re-start when the power is switched back on. It has to be started from the switch. It;s a Hare and Forbes /carbatech type unit

    That sounds like a good idea.
