    True, no collet is going to be harder than a solid carbide bit. I should probably replace the collet in my Festool OF900 router, but they are $95!

    The inside of the collet looks a bit worse for wear but I would think that if the router is run at top speed and reasonable depths of cut are taken it should still hold the bit in place okay. It looks like the collet has either had rust on the inside at some stage or there has been a fair bit of slippage over time.
    Would be worthwhile replacing it but they're not cheap at around the $50 mark

    The total length is 100mm. the cutter length is 50mm. This is longer than the plunge depth, that it sticks out a bit. That's why I'm bottoming out the bit in the collet.

    those spiral bits are hard to keep in a collet, they need to run fast with small bites. I don't really like them in hand held routers, too much mucking around, tungsten is preferred.
