    Default My New Japanese Chisel.

Believe it or not, Ive been here in Japan for about 4 years and never bought a Japanese chisel:eek:
I brought my set of Marples with me from England when I came here. Ive had them since I went to college to learn Carpenry & Joinery years ago.
was in the shop today, and picked up a Japanese chisel. Thought I'd buy it. Its not one of the high end ones (24mm Kakuri), yen 1700.
I must say, I dont know if I can pick up my old marples again... The weight, feel and balance of the Kakuri is way better. I chamfered some end/cross grain on some pine, then very hard bengkirai. really clean slices, no splits on the cross grain.
I might have to pick up another size next time im in the shop
    Cheers. Gary.

    You're just teasing us - aren't you!

Wouldn't mind a pic and later assessment when used in anger, if you don't mind.

    cheers

I have a 7 or 8" Kakuri white oak smoothing plane (kanna) which cost me US $33 from The Japan Woodworker and it is excellent. Holds the most brilliant edge, and serves as my apron / block plane (see pic below).

I've heard lots of good things aout these cheap Jap Kakuri planes, and nothing negative. I don't know about Kakuri chisels, though. Tell us more!

    Cheers,
    GW

I dont know much about them either, but they seem to be everywhere. I only bought it yesterday, so havent given it a real workout yet. Iam impressed with the weight and balance, and its bloody sharp. As I said before it feels much better in the hand than my Sheffield Marples. This one cost about $20Aus

Gary, full points for sneaking the Lamello biscuit king into the background - you just don't let up do you?

Just happened to be there:eek:. Seriously, I was just setting it up for a cut before I took the pic of the chisel. The lamello isnt the top end model. That was way tooooo much

Mate, if I could get Jap chisels for $20 each I'd be getting a set of eight or ten right now.

Is there anything easier done than said?

Mate if there was some safe way (not paypal, bad, bad company..) to send the $$$/yen, I'd gladly send some chisels out to you blokes???
With postage, exchange rates to yen, I don't know if it would work out any cheaper??
    Cheers. Gary.

If you could save $25 on each chisel, and get a few planes, and a few saws, and some measuring/marking gear...and drink some excellent japanese beer...a trip to japan in the off season is starting to look pretty enticing...
There's a boat inside me trying to get out.
    Was it something I ate?
