    Default Jointer Blade springs, necessary?

I got a carbatec jointer knife akignment kit for christmas and have been trying to use it to set new blades in my jointer. Whilst the concept appears easy to use I think the springs under the jointer blades are placing inconsistent pressure on the blades. If you have magnets holding the blades up whilst you tighten the jib screws is it really necassary to have the springs under the blades?
    Cheers,

My jointer has never had springs. I just use a few magnets and they seem well aligned

The other day I described to my daughter how to find something in the garage by saying "It's right near my big saw". A few minutes later she came back to ask: "Do you mean the black one, the green one, or the blue one?".

I've got my Grandad's 6" Paul Call, didn't have springs so he cut some thin slivers of foam. Just push down on the blade until it's roughly where you want it, tighten the grub screws a little, tap the blade into final place in relation to the cutter head (easier to show than explain) and Bob's your uncle.

    Simple as and effective.
