    Default Jointer / Planer Combos

I'm looking at buying a jointer (Carba Tec 6") and a DeWalt table top thicknesser. Space in the shop is a bit tight. Does anyone have a combo machine / or views on a combo. I like what I've read about the Jet combo machine. Any views would be great!

I have a jet combo and I find it good ,only takes a minute or so to change it over. I have not used it that much but its great to have when I need it.
    Good luck

Thanks for that Paul (great name!).

Just 1 question where did you buy it. We seem to have a Jet stockist in NZ, but he doesn't appear to stock them yet.

I have the Carbatec 10" combination machine AW106PT. I've had it for a little over 12months and use mostly recycled timber or rough sawn timber so it gets a fair workout.
It took me about 3 hours to get it setup but the only adjustments I ever have to make now is the thiskness of cut or when I change the blades.

Takes less than 1 minute to change from one mode to the other.
    Cheers,

I have a Dewalt combination machine. Really love it because there is no converting involved to go from jointer to thicknesser.

I recently bought an old 6" Makita combo off Ebay, I'd guess a 70's model.
As solid and as heavy as a rock, and very easy to use with one side being a jointer and the other a thicknesser.
I just hope I can find spare blades, brushes, bearings and belts when I need them!
    Cheers.

Has anyone seen the McJing combination jointer/thicknesser? I know its a little on the small side, being 204mm wide, but from what I can see this means the jointer is also 204mm wide. At $429, its got me interested because its the same price as a the Carbatec 318mm thicknesser, but I dont have to buy a separate jointer.

Can anyone shed some light on whether this is a good machine for a small workshop and beginning hobbyist on a budget?

I know I've seen that unit somewhere else, in a different colour scheme, but I can't remember where - it may have been one of the products announced for Triton but never proceeded with when GMC took over Triton, or it could have been Timbecon a couple of years ago. Still, the price looks OK.

Most recently, it was grey, and you saw it here: http://www.ozito.com.au/productinfo....odid=OZPT1500A (Yes... Ozito Grey... - Meaning of course that it is sold at the BigB... Well, whenever another full container load of them turns up, that is...)

You've obviously got orange on your mind! It was the latter - ie. Timbecon - and it was $479 even back then!..

Scratchy - there's been a couple of threads about that machine over the last 12 months or so. Bunnings were doing them for $349 when they had them, but you'd still want to proceed with much caution before actually "shelling out"...

Best Wishes to both of you,
    Batpig.

Thanks very much guys! At least Ozito have a little more info and detailed pics than McJing!

As it turns out, I may (most likely) be buying a Durden Junior Jointer tomorrow, for $180. Saw it on Ebay, rang the fella selling it, but it was sold through buy it now before I could talk to the seller. Cut a long story short, he rang me back tonight after telling me a week ago he'd only ring back if the other sale didnt proceed.

So, in this case, I will be most likely purchasing a Carbatec 12 1/2 inch thicknesser.

Does the Carbatec combo have enough horse power ? I know the answer largely depends on thickness of cut. Noticed that the Carbatec 15 in has 3 hp whereas the combo has 1 1/2 hp.

I've learn't through experience that it's best to go has powerful as you can afford !!

Bunnies have them @ $299 whereas mitre 10 have apparentnly the same machine with a different badge @ around $399.

The small combos are probably great for folk doing small work ,just dont expect too much from them as I explained to the bloke who was with me looking for a planer.

He's into model building and did'nt want to outlay too much money. As is the saying you only get what you pay for.
For his uses, one of these is Ok as he only deals with small off -cuts that he sources off me as well as other folk ,as well as building sites.

    Cheers
