Laser Engravers???
Does Anyone Know Much About Laser Engravers?
I have been looking around for a cheap desk-top one for doing small corporate giftware etc. I've looked at making my own but me thinks its a bit too much of a challenge.
Any advice on where to get a cheapy second hand would be a great help.

Gday Andrew & welcome .
There is a guy who does laser engraving out of the back of a van, he often is in attendance at the Akoonah park market in Berwick on Sundays. I had a yack to him a while ago and I think the distributor of his machine was in Sydney, & they also sold secondhand machines.
Maybe try the Yellow Pages under engravers or laser or somesuch & go from there.
Cheers.............Sean, per Dr Evil, isn't it called a "LAAAY - SSSEERRRR"

Way Out Of My Price Range
I'm out Berwick way on Sundays sometimes & don't mind the odd market so I might go check it out.
Could you give me the details of that market? Like what Sunday its on & the address if not too much trouble?
I've been looking around at laser engravers and prices start at about $10,000 so it may be way out of my price range but any advice is appreciated Thanks!

Laser Engravers
Hello Andrew,
I have undertaken a little bit of research and if you are looking at using a laser engraver for cutting and engraving timber, I would not be looking at a unit with less than a 35-40 watt laser.
New price on these is $25k upwards depending on the specs of the unit (table size, accessories, etc). There are two suppliers in Australia (could be more) but I do not have details at hand. One has an office in Melbourne & Brisbane, the other in Sydney (I think).
You really need to be aware of what your laser requirements are prior to looking. Be warey of the lower powered lasers when working with timber as you will find real limitations. Test drive before you buy, take along some samples of timber and get the saleman to engrave/cut some samples of what you intend to produce.

Andrew, I have a 50W LASER engraver (water cooled).
You will have to work out just what kind of material(s) you wish to engrave, then you need to ascertain the bed size to figure just how big a bed you need.
Another possibility is a rotary attachment, this allows you to engrave circular stuff like glasses, bottles and similar.
The choice of software is extremely important as to whether you will be able to do multiples or one off with ease.
I know that the list is almost endless, but I think the above criteria should see you thinking correctly
I work from home and live reasonably close to you, about 20 minutes by car. If you would like to see a smallish powerful LASER working, then I could arrange it.
I've had mine for over 9 years now and know some of the pitfalls and possible problems of a LASER. However I have to tell you they are one hell of a reliable machine. Mines had about 3 days down time and a changeover tube once in that time. Mine is also a quite large unit physically, it's required for the work I do, (rubber stamps).
There are at least 10 different suppliers of LASER machines in the country and second hand ones are now starting to be around in numbers.
Feel free to contact me if you desire more information.
Mick.

Thanks for all your help guys. Mick, sounds like you have a great set up. I use a guy down the road from time to time to do laser engraving however they have a minimum quantity requirement & sometimes my customers just want a one off piece made from a logo (jpeg file) they send me.
Do you do engraving work as well as stamps? If so what would you charge to do engraving for me & what minimum quantities. I'm also lloking for someone to make me a metal stamp for a branding iron type thing to burn the words 'Jarrah' or 'Tas Oak' etc into my pieces. e-mail me if your interested, Thanks again

Andrew, I take it you wish to have timber engraved?
I can put you onto a company that manufactures branding irons if you wish.
