    Default Linisher: Fixed or Oscillating?

I'm buying a linisher shortly. Carbatec have the Big Boy 6" Linisher on sale for $849 and an oscillating version for about $100 more.

Does the oscillating version have any benifit over the fixed?

The only advantage of oscillation is that it brings different parts of the belt to bear upon the object being linished. This means that you use the whole of the belt rather than just aprt of it. ie the lowest 19mm

OK, thanks. Is there a downside? Like more things to go wrong because of the extra moving parts.

If we are speaking of a spindle sander the oscillations would reduce sanding marks and produce a better result. Much the same way as a random orbital sander, there isn't a continuous point of contact for a single sandpaper grit.

If we are talking about the belt linishers then I have no idea as I have never seen one that oscillates.

I think we are all a bit confused. The only oscillating linisher I can see on the web site is $3K. If they're selling it for under $1K, get me one too. Buy them all and put them on EPay!

Like Stinky, I've never heard of the belt oscillating. They say it is also a bobbin sander, you sure that isn't the bit that oscillates?

It is not listed on the web site. Only the fixed Big Boy 6" Linisher (model BB-80B) is shown. The oscillating version (model BB-80S) is listed at $999 on page 14 of the latest Carbatec catalogue. It is a belt sander only, no bobin spindle.

I've actually seen one in use in a later episode of New Yankee Workshop.
