I was influenced by a US woodworking test which gave panasonic lithium tools the award for endurance against Makita, Dewalt, Millwauki, and Bosch. I figured this made sense as Panasonic are well known as the best battery manufacturers and they should use good ones in their own tools. Torque was pretty good at 44.1 Nm. Allegedly the brushless motor has twice the life of a brushed motor. My next purchase of a drill will be the sister impact driver (150 Nm torque). The drills are very compact 191 mm for the drill, 158mm for the impact driver and light 1.6Kg for the drill and 1.45 kg for the impact driver. I don't think I will be posting a request for advice on which drill though - too many opinions!(including mine)

Thanks mate, can you post the website of the US woodworking test please?

    Thanks, Evan

Pusser, I can't see where the EY7440 is brushless. None of the info on Panasonic.com says it is. I am still under the impression that the 14V driver is the only brushless Panasonic available. If the EY7440 is brushless I will buy one tomorrow, BTW did you get it from the US?

Here (japan) I believe there are a few Panasonic brushless drills. impacts and drill/drivers.
If you dont have them in Aus now, its only a matter of time.
    Edit*
Just checked National's (Panasonic) japanese website. The only brushless drills they make are 2 impacts.

    Guys,

I stumbled across this website article comparing dedicated impact drivers and drill drivers which is a very interesting read. I also found out from Panasonics US website through the online manuals that the EY7542LNS2 14.4V and EY7440 14.4V models do not have brushless motors; only the dedicated impact EY7540LN2S 14.4V model has a brushless motor. In the operating manual it states that an aftermarket chuck can be used with the EY7542LNS2 for drilling into wood or steel up to 9.5mm.

Now the deciding factor kicks in; should I buy the dedicated impact driver or the multi function impact driver with driver mode. At this point I lean towards the former because it has a brushless motor.

The only thing I dislike about shopping tools is there is too much choice out there which is a good thing also but more difficult to decide.

Once again guys I thank you for your time and input.

As I said earlier in this thread I went for the Festool due to no other brushless on the market doing both jobs. It comes with two quick fit chucks but not li-on battery power. After all this discussion I think that the manufacturers are not fitting drill type chucks to impact type drivers due to them not liking the impacts and falling apart. I think they would be better called an impulse driver but that is another conversation. The festool is the only one that is supplied with two chucks and when you get down to it is not that more expensive but is still not an impulse driver. I am still tossing up whether to buy the Panasonic, I have always liked them, especially after the abuse that my 9.6V has put up with. Damn, I have got to stop spending my kids inheritance.

I appologise for the error. My manual doesn't mention brushes and I have misinterpreted the Panasonic lithium Series Catalogue 2. the other data is correct The EY7541 and the EY7540 are the two brushless models. The Battery endurance comment comes from the Tauntons 2007 tool guide page 34 where they compare combos. "Endurance champions. Both the hammer drill and the saw won their respective endurance tests. The combo kit as a whole didn't fare as well finishing behind Metabo and Milwaukee. Dewault was best Value but finished 6th overall. As the only problem I have had with drills were the batteries this steered me to the Panasonics. Comparing the drills physically confirmed the choice for me.

Again I apologise for my error.

    Default Akasarashop.com FRAUD!!!

    Hi.
    I've been fooled by Aksarashop.com.
The owner Mr Dedy made me a special offer of $1000 dollars for sending me an order to europe and after I payed him with western union he said I had to add more items to reach the $1500 to send me the package. So actually the situation is that he has my money and he is not sending me the items.
So be carefull with this fraud company. They are foolers and cheaters...
I don't now if I will ever get my money back or the items....

    Sorry to hear that Pepe,
since finding the link here, and being interested at present in getting one of the Makita combo packs, I have done what research I could on Askarshop and myself too talked to 'Mr Dedy'.
Very fishy smelling from the getgo- for many reasons I won't go into, none of which Dedy's correspondence cleared up for me.

A couple of weeks ago I passed on the information to a friend in Indonesia. His opinion was that those prices can rarely even be had on the black market in indonesia, also hardly even on reconditioned tools, and never for such things as combo packs and items of bulk order.
Since passing on the information to him he was going to start communicating with them himself, and pass on correspondence to the Indonesian police, and also to the Thai Seng Group (who are distributors for Makita (and maybe other companies?) in the region) and try to get these guys shut down.

I hope you get your money back.
If you have a lawyer friend, it may be worth sending them some official legalized threatening letters... but it would be doubtfull if anything is going to work. You should definately try to track down whatever indonesian agency is responsible for policing this sort of thing (I will ask my friend about who that might be) and report the incident to them.

My guess about this 'company' was that they will operate for less than a year, catch and scam as many as they can, and then disapear (possibly reapearing again with a new company and name of course).

If you have any information you would like me to pass on to my indonesian friend then send me a message. Either way, if you don't mind, please let us know how this thing turns out for you

As an optimist at heart, I do get tired of these lessons that most often if looks this good then it can't be true.

Sorry to hear of your misfortune Pepe. I too had a look at the website and was very impressed by the prices; but having to spend a minimum of $1000 for an international transaction put me right off from the start. This bloke is an absolute conman and needs to be taught a good lesson, without going into detail; you know what I mean.

Hans, it is very good of you to express support and followup for our new poster Pepe.
I, personally am fuming as I write and very tempted to jump on a plane and meet this low life in person and shut him down my way. But being Indonesia, he most likely has "friends" in high places that can get him off the hook; typical of corrupt practices in Indonesia where the authorities are the biggest culprits.
I've said my bit and would also like to add that I would never set foot on Indonesian soil for all the riches on earth, not because of this incident, but also of the many other injustices and opressions that have been committed in the past at government level and definitely not anything against mainstream society or the common man going about earning an honest living.

I apologise for getting political here on this forum and accept the moderators' decision for any wrong doing.

Things you can do to shut them down:

Contact all the organisations he has on his website, as suppliers, supporters and referrals.
Contact the police in your area as well as a federal agency if you have such a thing in your country
    Contact Western Union

I know it is obvious in hindsight, but as someone who has been dealing with international sellers for around 8 years now, I can say that most people are genuine. the ones that aren't can usually be found out by the shabbiness of their websites, inability to transact using recognised methods or by refusal to disclose verifiable addresses etc.

I have now hit the 1000 mark in my eBay transactions and have to say it has been an excellent experience overall. the one thing that seems very robust after this time, is Paypal - in my experience, the people who have something against Paypal, usually feel the fees are excessive. Certainly there are fees for just about everything on Paypal, from exchange rates to selling fees, to withdrawal fees and so on, but there is also protection. I have put it to the test a few times and it is great in my opinion.

Western Union offers no such protections as far as I know, but as I have only used this once or twice, I may be wrong.

Finally, and I am among the world's biggest tight ar5es .... when something is simply THAT good a deal, like the DeWalt Combo pack for $110 - it is so obviously a scam that I can only attribute paying these people without investigation, to naivety in the extreme.

I stood in line at our local Post office the other day and watched a guy send a Western Union MO for $1345 to a Nigerian, in Nigeria - the staff member asked if he had met or knew the recipient ... "No, and it is none of your concern" came the reply .... she took his cash and did the deal .... staggered me, but the guy (at least 60 and dressed like a farmer) was obviously convinced he was about to receive 200 million or whatever BS hot button of his, they had pushed - no matter what you call it, it was his the GREED button. A fool and his money I reckon.....

Anyway, that is totally enough out of me - FWIW, I think Lithium Ion batteries will take the cordless world by storm.

I passed on Pepe's post to my Indonesian friend and he let me know that the Makita Surabaya and Japanese rep has been notified about Askarashop and their dealings.
Hopefully things are on the move on this front.

about the other stuff, I only have a couple of things to say.
My Indonesian friend is just as if not more off out this sort of thing than most of us probably are.
Yeah the prices do look too good to be true, but to tell the truth, when looking at what we pay here for these tools, some of the US prices also tend to look a little too good be true. I am not surprised at all that people are going to fall for this.

One thing we may actually be able to do is to spread a bit of the word out about this company. For example, do a google on the name- all that comes up is a range of listings and advertisements from the company themselves, and this one lone thread. No where apart from here (and even to find it here you have to do a bit of reading) is there anything negative (nor even positive) posted about this company.

If by some slim chance this company is not a rip-off, then I apologize for this endorsement, but, maybe what we can do is make a thread or two, post a message, whatever, across our various related forums and messageboards to get a bit more info out there warning people.

    ...

if I lost 1 cent from my bank account to some computer geek who managed to skim the same off many many others as well, and set themselves up as a billionair- I couldn't give two tosses. Really.

These sort of rorts (including the nigerian ones) make me so angry because they really really hurt people, financially and also personally.
Maybe there is often some greed in it, but also I think there are some other things not so bad, even a little admirable in our modern times- optimism, hope, genuine trust, a belief in final relief and luck from troubles and struggle.

If more info comes my way I will post it here.
In the mean time, lets just hope these guys get whats coming to them.

Default Lithium batteries naturally die over time

    Hi,
one thing to be aware of with current technology Lithium ion batteries is that their energy capacity (battery capacity in Amp-Hours) naturally decreases over time, regardless of use. The typical useful life of a Lithium battery is around 3 years before it must be replaced.
This information comes from an electric bicycle discussion forum - a battery on an electric bicycle gets a really hard life so any decreases in energy capacity get noticed real quick.
    Paul
PS. That is why you will have heard notepad PC users complaining that they have to buy a new battery (Notepads typically use Li-ion batteries). The rate of notepad PC obsolesence is faster than the limited life of the batteries so it is not seen as a big problem in the PC world.
