looking for old Makita belt sander - for the motor housing only
Hi all,
my late '70s Makita 9900 Belt sander (3"x21") finally became irreparable....
It is the early type with dust extractor on the opposite side to the drive and a plastic tube from the belt section to the blower.
Some 15years ago I dropped it and it cracked the handle off. I've repaired and reinforced it twice since, but the plastic is getting so brittle now, shifting the forces to somewhere else just makes it break there....
The motor, drive and belt track8ng etc are still perfectly good.
So I'm just hoping that someone might have hoarded/kept one that burnt out or otherwise expired. I really just need the motor housing part that includes the left side of the handle, but the other plastic parts would be a bonus for spares, because those plastics are obviously just as old (or exposed to the environment that has deteriorated the plastic).
JoeCheers,
Joe

Hi,
I had a similar problem with a 9401 sander that was almost new and had melted in a fire. To buy the new replacement parts was more than a new sander. Found a second hand case, same model number, started to rebuild and there was a difference in the housing, early/late build. I shelved the project for around twelve years, then recently wanted to get the thing going. I had to make some parts to adapt the early case, and ended up having to buy the missing cover that goes over the handle covering the wiring. When I received that, it was also a later build and didn't fit, requiring more mods. Anyway, got it finished finally, but you may have the same problems with a case for your 9900 if you can find one. Check very carefully for differences, but they will probably not be obvious till you try and reassemble. Good luck.

I found an identical sander second hand off Gumtree cheap and it's in good condition. So plan B is now in action: my old one has become spare parts instead....
Cheers,
Joe

Check ebay used. I just sold a made in England 3x18 makita 9911 on ebay yesterday for about $40, almost unused. I suspect there are plenty of other people like me who found a deal at one point and then haven't used them.

I checked ebay looking for more bits after I had already spent some time and money on my sander and discovered Makita sanders of the same model that had been sold recently for next to nothing, which would have been a cheaper alternative to repairing mine. I did have a sense of satisfaction from making something usable that had been in a box collecting dust for more than ten years though.
