    Default Lumber Wizard? - Anybody

I've read Dean's review and sat on the sideline but the nail damage is getting ridiculous. Has anybody had one of these things for awhile....Hows it travellin?.

Can I just buy the $50.00 el cheapo metal detector instead??

    Cheers

Dean, the cheap models I refer to are the types purported for use for finding gold and valuables. I don't know wether they would work well on stuff imbedded in timber.

I just wanted to see how the lumber wizards where holding up to general use..you know..like being dropped, having timber dropped on them etc . I don't like to buy new models if you know what I mean.

    Thumbs up

    Hi Squizz,
I have had the Lumber wizard (big gun!) for about 18 mths now & am VERY happy with it.
Saved me quite a few $$$$ due to broken off nails in recycled Jarrah.
I take my timber outside the shed & sit on top of some plastic milk crates etc as it will easily pick up the rio in concrete slabs etc or metal frames of horses/stands.
I remember paying about the $200 mark from MIK & recently saw them in AWR at Woodworking Warehouse (Gregory's) for about the $165 if remember correctly?????????

Not something I use evry week, but nothing like having it, BEFORE you feed that nail into buzzer!
    Regards Sandman.

Havent used the generic metal detectors. And havent yet dropped timber on the lumber wizard or dropped it from great height, and don't plan too either if I can help it, so I can't answer that

    Squizzy,
one of the blokes up here who runs a lucas mill uses a large metal detector, you know, one of those big buggers people use to fossick for empty cans on the beach. Reckons it works a treat and will find nails and bits of wire embedded deep in trees. Cost a fair bit more than $50 though. I've seen them 2ndhand around the $150s

Could you use one of them metal detectors upside down(scan wood from underneath) to avoid any misreadings?

I have both the Lumber Wizard and the Little Wizard. Both work well for the respective speciality. Little Wizard works best pinpointing something (like brads in a joint in a piece of furniture) while the other works best for scanning larger surfaces (like lumber or tabletops.

Those detectors don't know the difference between right side up or upside down.

Default Test it before you take it out the shop !

    Hi Squizz,

I've had a version 2 lumber wizard for almost a year now. Can't comment about dropping etc because it's had a pretty easy life in that respect.

BUT.....the first one I got didn't work properly, and when I went back I insisted upon testing before taking the replacement. Much to the shop owner's surprise we went through about 6 units (brand new in the pack) before finding one that worked.

I'm very happy with the one I ended up with, but make sure you test it with a brand new battery before you fork over your hard earned.

    Cheers,

    Justin.

Outback, he only looks for the full ones, has the machine setup to screen out gold, coins, watches etc so he doesn't waste his time digging around for useless stuff.

Al, the price of metal detectors has come way down. I remember paying over $800.00 for a Garret years ago. The $300.00 ones now make it look like a museum piece...Hey...I'm hijacking my own thread:confused: ...is that a record??
