Question The Machine I would like

I've done the searches and keep coming up with EVERYTHING but the Answer I'm looking for.

I am in a position to get plenty of cheap undressed timber.
Some of it is rough, quite rough.

What do I require to "Smooth" it to the desired finished dimension?...........NOTICE I DID NOT SAY 'THICKNESS'

Thicknesser, Planer, Jointer, Moulder, Thinnesser ???????

But that's what I want to end up with. From about an Inch [25mm] down to about 19-20mm.

Tired of trying to do fine work using rough timber and a hand plane.

    Thanks,
    Ivan in Oz

PS. remind me not to buy 'el cheapo' any more(

Not sure exactly what you mean by 'smooth' it?

From what I understand of the question, you have some choices.

Jointers and thicknessers are obviously designed to remove timber - which includes the rough surfaces. Decent machines will leave quite a good surface which should not require a lot of sanding.

If you're starting with rough timber that is warped, cupped or twisted in some way, you need to get one flat, square face - and to do that you really need a jointer.

To get timber to a consistent thickness you need either a thickness planer or a thickness sander (either belt or drum) - though the planer will get you there quicker, and the sander will do better on cranky grain & thinner pieces.

If the timber is straight you can skip the jointer and go straight to the thicknesser - I don't yet have a jointer so I need to choose my timber carefully.

With a straight, wider board you can clean up the two wide faces with the thicknesser and then clean up the edges on a table saw with a decent blade. With a piece closer to square you can clean up the two wider faces with the thicknesser, square up one of the sides on the table saw and then put it through the thicknesser with that side down to square everything up.

    Hope that helps anyway

    Hiya craigb

Haven't had a lot of time lately - 12 hour days at work, 2.5 hours travelling there & back each day, a 3 year old daughter, doing an MBA part time - basically busier than a one legged man in an kicking competition

Finally got my head above water and starting to get back into the workshop now. I've missed it.

    You mean like this
    http://www.gregmach.com/equipment_ca.../jet_jpm13.htm

    Only a LOT cheaper.
Then, for the cost and considering
the amount of timber I presently use,
I 'should' go to the normal 'Robbers'
    and buy timber ready dressed.

I'm looking to do more wood work once I finish the Extension.
Should I mention I am using Galvanised Steel frame?
A few months exposed to the elements don't hurt Gal.
