    Default Mafell DDF40 Duo Doweller

I've seen videos ( New Mafell DDF 40 Domino Duodoweler Maximax - YouTube ) and read reviews on this and it looks really interesting and sparked my curiosity and yet there's been no discussion here which is not surprising as you can't buy them in Australia or I haven't found anywhere and there isn't a Mafell support center here like there is with Festool. Its similarly priced to the Domino in fact I've found it a bit cheaper including delivery from Europe and North America. Voltage isn't a problem

Please don't tell me to buy a Domino as I already own one and still love it and also the Triton doweller which looks similar but its not in the same league. This Mafell dowller suits me and if its available and I know there is some sort of support then I'm interested but at this stage it doesn't look good. If I end up getting one and like it as anticipated then I'll either keep the domino, which is a splurgy thing to do, or sell it. I can already see the pluses and minuses of both. They are simply different.

Does anyone own one in Australia and if so where did you get it from?

I don't have a DD, but I have a Mafell jigsaw. I bought it from Dictum in shermany. Took a while to get here (somewhere near the beginnings of the COVIDS), but pretty painless.

Remember you're going to be stung for import fees and duties as it's over $1000, not just GST.

Yuk! Forgot about the costs for over $1000. What a shame a great brand like Mafell doesn't have a presence here. There are even Mafell retailers close to us in New Zealand but they can't ship here. I've already emailed them.

Maybe they can ship it to someone in NZ who can send it on to you?

If I order this from the UK what happens with electrical. This uses 240 volts so does a simple adapter from UK to Aus plug work or do I need an electrician? Anyone bought a UK tool and use it here? What happens to warranty?

It will come with a UK plug. Mafell uses captive power cords, as opposed to Fe$tool's plug-it type, so you either have to chop the plug off and put an aussie plug on, or use an adaptor (cheap) - like this one from BigW. I'm ex-uk so have a UK 3 plug powerboard and just put an Aus plug on that.

I registered my jigsaw on Mafell's warranty site without issue, but haven't had to claim so no idea how it would be handled.

Knowing manufacturers today, any excuse not to honour will be grabbed at, so I'd suggest going the adaptor route.

I think I might go with Colin's advice above after doing a bit more homework. I do know people in NZ. Shipping is only about $9 there and they could then send it to me as a gift. I'm still waiting for Mafell Germany to advise on an Aussie agent who they do mention on their website but they don't seem to sell any of their brand. Obviously this is my preferred way to go. So at this stage I'm close to giving up which is a shame given that a product that looks good and would be useful is so hard to get in Australia.

Hi barri, I'm not affiliated, but apparently The People's Tool Company can handle Mafell for the Australian market.

It seems by that post that they will also arrange warranty. However it would be worth investigating whether their prices are competitive.

Yes, remember the import duty! That stings...

That post was 2 years ago but I have contacted them to see what they can offer. Also, I contacted Mafell in Germany and the official current agent is ( www.rothoblaas.com ) in Melbourne. They don't stock anything but they can get any Mafell tool. They gave me a quote which included an enormous delivery cost of $247 including GST. YUK! They said that once ordered, Mafell would change the electrical plug to Australian
If it was in stock like in New Zealand then that makes it a lot more worthwhile. I've decided to not go ahead despite liking the look of this tool. There are very few resources like on the Domino which has many companies providing jigs and adapters and there are a huge number of very helpful videos and documents. There are some videos on the DDF40 but none of them with commentary are in English. So there seems to be a lack of local support, spare parts and accessories. Nearly everything has to be ordered overseas. I am concerned with lengthy delays if there was a breakdown in the warranty or non warranty period. I'm still happy withe the Domino which does everything that I need with accuracy and precision.
If Mafell had a bigger presence here then I would have probably sold the Domino.

I am interested in the duo as well. Primarily it would be used n a shop situation joining 20mm hick mitre joints.
Apparently the domino in order to do this tou use the 5x30 dominos but set the holes about 5mm from the inside edge of the mitre as not to breakthrough the other side.
I was wondering If anyone here on the forum has any experience either mitreing 20mm timber with with the domino or the Maffel Duo.
    Thanks in advance
    Tony

Additionally, I received a quote with shipping and it is comparable to the entry level domino.

I don't know anything about the duo but I have a P1cc Jigsaw and recently I broke the small plastic section at the front, (not too sure how it happened i was only changing the base from the angled back to the fixed and perhaps I hit the plastic bit in doing so), that retains the blade guard and needed to replace it. Shipping was prohibitive from Timberwolf tools at $83.80 US for a very small cheap part that could easily have been slipped into an envelope - why use Fedex when you could just use standard airmail postage is beyond me! Thanks to the Forum I contacted Rotoblaas and received a very prompt reply and a reasonably priced quote so have ordered the part from them. The contact details are as follows:

    Rotho Blaas Australia Pty Ltd
Factory 1/114 COLEMANS ROAD, CARRUM DOWNS VIC 3201
    T. +613 8787 7579
www.rothoblaas.com - [email protected] and the person I dealt with was Kerrina McKenna and she was absolutely great. In view of my experience I would highly recommend anyone in the least bit interested in Mafell Tools to contact Kerrina for a quote. A true sign of a company wishing to be helpful is going to great lengths to obtain a quote quickly especially as the part was priced at $7.20 AUS from them, interestingly enough the part was the same price from Timberwolf but priced in US dollars. I feel that if Rotho Blaas receives the support they deserve from woodworkers in Australia then support and availability for Mafell tools can only get much better.
Hopefully my post might be helpful to other members.
