Need a shopsmith part. Anybody got any ?
Hello,
After some help.
I've got an old shopsmith 10e thats missing a floating centre for the tailstock for when using the thing as a lathe.
I've searched E-bay and other sites that deal in shopsmith parts. But, they are all in the U.S, and for one reason or another they don't seem too interested in shipping the part to Australia. Frustrating !!.......thinks its something to do with the security problems they go through since 911, at least what one bloke says....But that seems a little far fetched.
Its only a small part....1" outer diameter that sort of bolts in ....and has a tapered hole in centre to take a #2 morse tapered live centre.
Willing to pay up to $30 Australian for it. Even though this is over priced I think, like to resolve this problem, since its been dragging on too long.
Thanks
Jake.

What you need is a friend in the US.
I needed some shopsmith parts & I could order & pay for them & have them shipped to the friend's place in the US.
The friend held it til I got there to collect it but they could have posted it to me.Cliff.
If you find a post of mine that is missing a pic that you'd like to see, let me know & I'll see if I can find a copy.

Can you get one made in an engineering shop here?
Growing old is much better than the alternative!

Cliff's idea sounds good. But I don't know any yanks. Well, I don't know any well enough to ask a favour. Would mean the bloke would have to buy it in advance for me. I know I can be trusted, but the nice bloke who does me a favour won't know that. Don't wont him worrying about getting his money back. So, I'd prefer to do it myself.....
Hoping I might get lucky with one of you blokes with the part rusting about a shed somewhere doing nothing but taking up space.

The first picture shows what I'm after. The floating centre is that steel bolt looking thing on right.
In picture 1 I want the the thing on the left as well, the live centre, but if I can't get the origional one I can get by with a modern live centre that should fit.
In picture 2. I'll need the drive centre thats labeled 'A'. Again like the live centre I'd prefer the origional part, but I will buy new if need to. This shots from that shopsmith company catalog in the states.
In picture 3 shows the faceplate. Can't see myself using this much. Really just want to turn between centres for occational work. But I never know. So I'd like that too.
So 4 parts I'm after. But very happy if all I get is the floating centre .
Continued next post.

These are really the only parts I have left. A lot were missing when I got the shopsmith. Willing to give away in a swap.
Picture 1 - mitre bar
picture 2 - arbor attachment. That goes on spindle. I've got a blade as well you can have.
picture 3 - rip fence.

Thanks for the PM Ivor, finally found someone. For some annoying reason the private messaging screen is freezing when I try and post back to you.
I'm more than willing to swap the above stuff. But even if there is nothing I've got that you need, please consider selling them to me anyway ...
Thanks again.
Jake.

Apricotripper,
The photos didn't work so here is an explanation of what I have as spares:
NO Live centre- Not a 10Er part as i understand MKV Part
Spare Floating Centre fitted into tailstock complete if you want it I have it soaking in WD40 to try to loosen it at present.
2x Spare Drive centres( diffferent diameters) WELL USED but OK Centre pins can be removed and remade if required.
1 x Spare Drive centre B Centre pin only fare but OK
I have 2x 12" Sanding Discs but need to keep both.
Send me a PM and your email address and i will send photos of all parts.

I don't know if any of this will help, but it might. The Shopsmith machine used to be made by Magna Company till somewhere around the 70's (I think) when it's assets were bought from the bankrupt company. I believe all the parts that were needed are currently available at www.shopsmith.com with one possible exception. The possible exception might be the floating centre for the tailstock. I'm not sure if that's used in the current model or not.
I have seen tailstock assembly's on Ebay before. If that part is used in the current model, that might be a way to get that one part.
I used to have a Magna built lathe sold by Montgomery Wards (like Sears or other department stores) and all the Shopsmith turning accessories fit it. In fact, though it was built somewhere in the 50's, the current Shopsmith spur center and screw center fit it. If I remember right, the tailstock used a #2 MT.
Hope that helps someone.
Paul
