Makita Circular Saw - aluminium or steel base?
For the smaller 185mm Makita Circular saw, there are actually 2 models.
There is the 5740NB and the 5806B (both with the 1050W motor)
The 5740 has a larger base plate in aluminium
The 5806 has a steel base plate (and then there is the "green" or "M" series cheaper copy of this model which bunnings are now stocking - just to confuse things further)
Focussing on Makita blue only, which is the better base plate?
Both appear to be same saw, (yes they are both same blue) and top one does come with black handle also and both with 2 blades included.

Totaltools link above shows both in full. Bunnings stock both. Makita website only shows the 5740.
It all come down to the base plate and i am not sure of pros/cons of each. All comments/advice appreciated.

The aluminium based saw actually has a considerably bigger motor as well. I have both and find that the cheaper, pressed metal base saw is fine for general day to day use. It will take anything you can throw at it and perform brilliantly all day long. For the price I think these are the best tradesman's saw on the market.
The only problem is that the base can tend to warp or bend if it's dropped or as it gets thrown around in the ute or toolbox, but this is generally fairly easy to deal with. The aluminium base model is a nice piece of machinery - a little more powerful & robust. When I bought mine the metal based saw was being made in China and the aluminium based was still made in Japan. The same options are available in the 230mm (9 1/4") saw as well, and Hitachi also make an aluminium based 230mm saw.
Go for the 185mm metal based saw. It will last you ten years or more - comes with a brilliant thin kerf blade and is perfectly balanced.Don't Just Do It.... Do It HardenFast!!
