Yes, you can use a higher amp batt. Just make sure the voltage is the same.

John a higher amp/hr rating just means it will work for longer.
The AH rating is basically a bucket of amps. The drill will only draw as much current as it needs till the bucket is empty. Higher AH rating means a bigger bucket.

I have the 18v version of these (non-OEM) and they seem to be fine.

Thanks guys. I did think that was the way with amps but wanted to be sure.
I managed to get a pair on ebay at $42 each so not too bad. The price range is staggering as one seller has them at $555 each. I think the drill cost about $220 with charger and 2 batteries.

I had not made up my mind yet about the show but her indoors has said what else will you do at the weekend so being under orders I'll just have a look and see if any volinteer slots are left.

Just be sure that your existing charger will charge your new batts. Ie if your new batts are Lithium, NiMH, NiCad etc that the charger is ok for them. (this mainly applies if you have an older charger)

Also ensure the new batteries will fit your tool. There's quite a bit of inbuilt redundancy in cordless tools where manufacturers prefer you to be buying a whole new tool than upgrading the battery platform.

Not all battery mounts are forwards compatible. DeWalt is one of the better manufacturers in this regard, and the rest seem to be just awful, with little opportunity to upgrade your tools to newer battery tech.
