    Default How to make a mitre joint?

    I would like to make some boxes - such as jewellery boxes - but given the equipment I've got, I'm not sure of the best way to make accurate mitre joints.

    (I will eventually look into making box joints/finger joints, but that's for another day)

    I have a
    - triton workcentre, with the bevel guide thingy
    - a 45degree chamfer bit, diameter 47mm which I gather is too big to use (safely) with
    - my single speed Makita router (1/2", 22000rpm only).
    - a friend who has a Triton workcentre with the Triton VS router buried in his shed that you need to be stick thin to enter.


    As I am typing this post, the obvious "Borrow the VS router" comes to mind.
    Any other suggestions or options?

    What speed is suitable for the chamfer bit (Triton brand)? (I bought the bit some years ago before I realised the speed issue).

    I can't comment on the bevel guide, but I have had very reasonable results with the WC200 in cross-cut mode with the saw set to 45 degrees

    You have to set up a false bottom with a slab of MDF as per the manual and maybe add two fresh pieces to the fence but it does work.
    Tune it up on a bit of scrap and you'll get nice smooth cuts.

    I've done a whole bunch of skirting both inside and outside corners this way with no gaps

    I have a couple of suggestions, firstly get in contact with the triton user group, they meet regular at one of the melbourne TAFE's (Our own Gumby, and a few other charaters from this boards are regulars). They will be able to work you through your triton and tell you how to get the best out of it, or if you post a suburb maybe one of the good people here will offer to help if they are close by. I am out east and would be willing to come to you if you are close (Though I am no great woodworker, but I do have a Triton so know how to use one , kind of anyway)
    I may not have gone where I intended to go, but I think I have ended up where I needed to be.

    I'd forgotten that my saw could be angled in the triton in cross cut - I've been seeing too many table saws with the saw underneath and the blade angled.

    I haven't been to the Triton group at Homlesglen in four years - I've been studying, and that has put a hold on a lot of activities.

    Sandra first off welcome

    an alternative to mitre joints are half lap joints advantages
    provided you can cut the ends square, the joint will go together easily.
    the rebate for the bottom and top panels will be hidden by the housing
    all the parts of the box can be cut with the saw set at 90° to the table
