Default Multimaster: will it replace a ROS ?

    Hi all,

I've been reading back through the multimaster threads. I have some questions if I may.

About a year ago I bought a bosh blue ROS on special, which I am yet to use. I am wondering if I should sell it on and buy the fein.

Will the fein replace a ROS ?

Those of you who have had them a while now: Has the novelty worn off or do you still use it often ? Have you had any breakdowns (apart from the detaching pads noted elsewhere).

Does anyone have experience with the bosch (or other) equivalents ?

Any other thoughts ? best vendors ? aftermarket accessories ?

    Thank you in advance.

Fein will never replace the ROS as the Fein is just a detail sander.

You can get 125mm sanding pads for them.

IMHO, whenever there is a combination machine there are trade-offs. A 125mm pad stuck to the end of a Fein sounds like it would be horribly balanced and probably unable to apply pressure in the right direction ie. straight down. It may work for occasional use, but if you're planning to use it regularly as a substitute I think you may be disappointed.

I have the Fein multimaster. It is a great piece of equipment. However, using the sander for prolonged periods will vibrate you to bits. The vibration action of the multimaster is pretty agressive even though the vibration angle is very small.

I've got the Bosch pro 125mm ROS, the Bosch 150mm ROS/ directdrive sander and the fien multimaster. While they are all sanders, they do different things.
The fien is really only meant for detail sanding and does that brilliantly, the bosch 125mm ROS does a great job at finish sanding and if I find a job that needs fast material removal, the 150mm Sander in direct drive does the work.
I also have the bosch pro version of the fien, again a great tool for detail work but it has a purpose and to try to make it do another job is a waste of time and effort, not to mention hard on the tool when not necessary.
So with all that said, keep the bosch and by the fien then you have the best of both worlds.
    Hope this helps,

    Ross.

I have a multimaster and one of the big pads for it. It's a damn expensive little accessory at $200. I read the blurb about it and somewhere it says that the big pads are only designed to be used for a short period of time.

I treat it as a convenience item. If I am using the Fein for another job and have it out then I will use the big pad for something quick. Like a quick once over before a coat of paint or varnish on a window sill. It's definately not designed for use for more than a minute or so at a time in my view. It's not very comfortable, and the action isn't as good at producing a nice uniform surface as a ROS.

So no it's not something that I'd use to replace my ROS with. The ROS is for bigger surfaces and longer periods of use.
