Oval wheel on bench grinder
I have a new 6" bench grinder with a grey wheel which was slightly out of round.
I used a diamond truing device freehand (the flat one, with lots of little diamonds, mounted on a steel rod) and this made it worse. What could I be doing wrong?
I would like to get this truing business sorted before I get a white wheel.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

i would check the axle of the grinder to make sure the wheel is sitting on it correctly and doesnt wobble , if it doesnt mate with the axle then doesnt matter how tight you bolt it, it will wobble out of round, in fact it would be dangerous...
there should have been little shims with the wheel to make sure its inner diameter is the same size as the outer diameter of the axle, if they are not your stuffed. be careful a loose wheel will eventually explode, I wouldn't be turning the sucker on until youve got it fixed if this is the problem.
oh by the way , dont stand in front of the grinder until its up to operational speed as when the wheel approaches the point of resonance this is when it will go pop.
cheers good luck.Zed

One thing you may be doing is just following the wheel.
What you have to do with the dresser is slowly bring it up to the wheel until it just rubs and slowly work away at the high spots. As you move the dresser in slowly the high spots should get longer until you have got the whole wheel round.
Start of by using a texta mark all the way round and another where the high spots are.
If you are doing it right the high spots will dissapear first. Keep doing this until the texta touches the wheel all the way round without moving in or out..
If this does not help then there may be a problem with the wheel or the grinder.Jim Carroll
