    FWIW:

"Lastly, I measured the size of each carry box. Some people will deem this last criterion insignificant, but I believe that one of the best ways to preserve your tool is to keep it in its original carry case, and many of them are far too big to encourage this practice."

The average ranking he gives is fairly meaningless to me. I couldn't care less about the size of the box or the weight of the drill. I'm much more concerned about how much torque it has and how long the batteries last, so I would simply ignore all the other rankings, sort on 'number of screws' and then choose the best one I can afford.

Perhaps it would have been slightly more useful if he'd included a ranking on 'ability to countersink'.
"I don't practice what I preach because I'm not the kind of person I'm preaching to."

    Andrew

Yes, the 12v came with Nicads. I am still using the same two batteries that it came with some 10 years ago. I had the slow charger - 1 hour - but this is old technology and it was possible (too expensive for me at the time!) to get a 20 min charger.

The 15.6v did come with metal batteries (3.0) and does charge up in about 20 minutes. The charger for all Panasonics is the same now, so I use the 15.6 charger on the 12v, and charge time is reduced to about 20 minutes.

If you can get Nicads with the 15.6, I would go for it. When I had the 15.6v batteries repacked (Siomar Battery Industries, in Perth), I compromised on cost and used 2.75 instead of 3.0 (and it still cost me about $150). This does not reduce the power, only the run time. And this is insignificant in the scheme of things (I have two 15.6 batteries as well as two 12v batteries).

    Regards from Perth

I have a Panasonic drill/driver and it is a beautiful unit, but a bit heavy I got it from

One note about buying from overseas, there is another recent post from somebody who paid $200 customs fee on importing a $250 item from the US. I think the cut off for attracting customs attention is $250, so this would flag up with them

    Just on Just tools

Bought a couple of tools from them and they are a great shop.

One of the first to have a half decent web site.

Back to the drill, its like most things, pay your money and take your chances.

Although with the internet and web sites like this, one is so much better informed.

    Cheers

    i have 3 cordless drills 2 x 9.6 volt festo's and one 12v panasonic
the panasonic is the oldest, and still the best, the festo's are not in my opinion worth what they charge, both teh festo's suffer from various problems, but yes they do get serious use. ( i have other festo gear that i would not swop for anything) i would never buy a festo drill again, problems include, chuck wobble, electronic brake intermitent, trigger intermitant, one motor failure (fixed under 1+2 warranty) contacts from battery to body, 1 battery dead, and yes a new genuine battery is only a couple of hundered bucks. Panasonic about 4-5 years old no problems!!!!
Festo's 15min charger is very nice though.
