    Default paslode cordless brad nailer

    G'day mate:

I'm about to start fixing cedar tongue and groove (groove and tongue?) boards to finish a ceiling or two. The boards are roughly 3/4 inch thick (20 ml). I've been getting conflicting advice on the type of fixing to use. I WANT to use a cordless brad nailer and the Paslode I'm getting uses 16 gauge nails up to 2 inches (50 ml) long.
My question also is, will I need to adjust the depth of the nail so it doesn't go too far in and maybe making the fixing weak; and will this type of fixing (brad nail) be sufficient to hold the boards to the ceiling.
I have what's called 'strapping' boards holding the plastic vapour barrier and the insulation in place already. This strapping is what I've been using in the rest of the house to hold the drywall on the ceiling.

Hi, I can't see that it'd be a problem. Skew the nails a little and, yes, adjust the depth so the head ends up just below the surface. I used a Paslode finish nailer on 12 mm (1/2 inch) lining boards on my 40 degree ceiling using 32mm (I think) nails and after three years it's all still up there.

I assume the "strappping boards" are what you're thinking of nailing into? How thick are they? Although if they're up to holding the drywall (we call it gyprock) up it should do the job for the lining boards as well.

hi and welcome to the forum mr. brush driver.

you should have no problems nailing with 50mm nails.

i would also use a contact adhesive, such as liquid nails or no more nails or what ever is available in your neck of the woods.

btw, i assume your nailing pattern will be 2 nails in each board.
may i suggest you try and use a secret nail pattern by nailing just above the tongue and holding the gun at a 45 degree angle.

then the groove of the next board will hide this nail.
the second nail will be seen, i assume you will use a cedar filler to fill in the nail holes.

google flooring secret nail techniques and also search on youtube if you dont understand what i have explained above.
