Paulcall Jointer Bearings
Remember this jointer I got few weeks back - http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com...ad.php?t=30463
Well I put it onto a TEMPORARY stand - as I hesitantly upload pics 1 to 3
Don't laugh coz its all VERY rough (probably not in keeping with the forum after seeing the beautiful work you guys can do) but it works and will do until I can get some electrons flowing through a TS. I used handsaw and recycled rough sawn pine from salvaged pallet - don't want to use any good stuff, lots of Aquadere and no I didn't pass it across the jointer which was now sitting on the floor next to motor - lack of foresight on my part. And I stuffed up the angle on one pair of legs.
Anyway I got some motor attached and fed belt to jointer thanks to Waldo's ideas. Bolts are too long but will leave as they are until the "proper" stand is made. Quick safety check and switch on - click, click, click.
Check for objects - none found. Traced noise to top bearing.
OK problem is the extra weight on the pulley is throwing up some bearing noises that wasn't apparent earlier . For now I'll reduce pressure on belt using threaded bolt and springs but I need to strip the bearings and fix.
I don't really want to strip them down without knowing what to expect.
Has anyone stripped one of these down, what's inside, anything novices like me should look out for in dismantling ? The bearings seem to be contained in a cylinder with face and back plate held together by 4 small bolts and nuts. There appears to be a pressure plate so I haven't ventured any further.
Thanks
Tony
PS dust extraction to follow, don't they create heaps of shavings !

Bad luck on the bearings. From personal experience, I've found that old tools like these often contain surprise problems latter. uno, they've failed, and sat unfixed in someones shed for many years.
I'd personally just pull it down and see what happens. Lay it all down away from everything (cause it may be there a while, while your getting new parts) in order. Draw a quick sketch if you feel you need it, so you can get it back together.
I'd just degrease the parts, so you can look for damaged parts. If its a bearing, then you can take it straight in to a bearing shop....and just give it to em, to get a replacement. Let an expert work it out, so you don't have to measure a thing. Might have trouble getting an old bearing size.....maybe not.
Anycase, goodluck.

Tony, you may be surprised about the bearing, they could well be ball bearings. I've got a Hyco BS which would be around the same vintage as your surfacer and its got ball bearings.
You shouldn't have any problems getting new bearing it may just take a few days to get them in of they are an obscure size.
Take your time, and maybe take photos as you go just to make sure that everything goes back where it came from and have fun!!!Have a nice day - Cheers
