Right.!
It takes me about 10 fr!!gin minutes to undo all the fiddly bolts to get the the cover and chute off (CTJ-381 motor below). I just did it yesterday to adjust that little plate away some more from the blades because it was incredibly noisy with the DC connected.
Annoying as the process is, I will do it again and remove the shield and see how it goes.
I will report back.. Greenie for you DJ if it worksI know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones.

Just in case anyone is looking a manual this is where I got mine from. The fundamentals are the same. http://grizzly.com/products/G0453

According to the Grizzly manual, it suggests that the chip deflector should be positioned 1/4" away from the knives if connected to a DC, and 1/16" if not connected.
The manual I got with my CT 381, does not even mention anything about the chip deflector, with the exception of the exploded parts list.
I have been using mine connected to a DC and was concerned about the noise, as the thing screams like a banshee, as soon as the DC is switched on.
I'll be trialling the removal as soon as time permits

Youll be very surprised at the reduction in noise level.
Mine used to make an awful drone when switched on, and when you turned the DC on it was.
Now when turned on it just sounds like a motor running, and hardly any difference with the DC going.
The bugger still makes a noise when I whack some timber through it though.

Bloke!! What a score!!!
If thee were me I'd be buying some new blades - every usual machine supplier will have new blades for that thing. But yeah first check that it can and does all run straight in the roller, cutter and height adjustment - most of the latter is under the table while the roller and cutter adjustment is in the side of the frame. Most of the adjustment I found with ours was required in the chain driven height adjustment - mostly to do with levelling.
Main thing I can see is that it doesn't have in the photos is the input and output feed tables. You'll be needing them.Ours is not to reason why.....only to point and giggle.

I removed the chip deflector, re-assembled the beast, and absolutely no difference in sound, volume or pitch
Put it back in again, and still no change in either drone or banshee sound effects
Going through the manual again, to see if there is more to be 'adjusted' or whether it is just the flat orange plastc strip.

Bugger
I think it is the leading edge of the plasticy thing that makes all the noise as its pointy shaped, like the edge of a whistle.

Even starting the beast wih the cover off, either with or without the chip deflector installed, makes no difference

Thanks for advice
Thanks for the advice. I will visit Carba-Tec to see if I can get the blade setting gauge. The input and output tables are definitely missing and I hadn't realised that was what the extra holes were for. I guess some home made ones will be the oredr of the day.

Mine didn't make much difference on the noise level but it certainly sucked a hell of alot better
Cheers
