Replacing 14.4V Makita Ni-Cd power packs with Ni-Mh
I have an old Makita 6281D battery drill which the charger is telling me my battery is broken and refuses to charge. Rather than buying a new drill I can get a couple of replacement batteries off ebay for ~$50. This seems reasonable except all the Makita 14.4V packs listed are described as NiMH while the original pack is Ni-Cd.
The adverts claim the replacement packs are for the right battery type (PA14) and drill model (6281D). The charger is labelled as suitable for NiMH and NiCd batteries.

Are the NiMHs really direct replacements for NiCd? They are also more than twice the Ah rating of the originals.Franklin

As long as the charger is suitable for NiMH, they should be suitable although with the higher capacity it will take longer. I had a Bosch drill and had the same problem. The guys assured me that the charger was suitable (although it didn’t say so in the manual) but it wasn’t. It will not fully charge the battery and even charging to a reasonable charge takes hours

We have a related problem with our robot vacuum cleaner. I replaced the original Li-ion batteries with a larger capacity set in hope it would run for longer but after charging for the usual amount of tine the vac gives a charging error and then it does not run for that much longer than it did with the original batteries. There must be some "smarts" in the vac that says to only charge the batteries by a specific amount and then to stop the charge.

I went ahead and pushed the buy it now button, so I'll report back after I've given them a workout.

I got those a few years back and they work fine. Also find the 3 amp hour battery is an improvement on the original that was about 1.5. I find those ones in the makita charger do not take all that long to charge. It is definitely much faster than the Li-ion for my Triton stuff.

Received these today. They fit my drill and the charger charges them. So far the drill bits turn round when I press the trigger.

My replacement batteries have been doing the job for about 4 years now using the makita charger. So far no problems.

Hi Bob
I had a similar experience with my NBN batteries. Apparently/allegedly NBNCo really cheapskated on their equipment and their software calculates when the NBN batteries should expire and then they start beeping and warn you to replace the batteries. It does not actually sense the voltage in the batteries or anything else to determine that the batteries actually are at/near the end of their life.
In May last year year my NBN batteries beeped, hourly, and NBN said replace them. A mate said f-NBN, switch off the charger and unplug the battery for two minutes to clear the NBN memory, then reconnect and switch on. Worked perfectly for about eight months, then beeped again, etc. Repeated procedure and the original battery is still working well a further six months later.....
Cheers
Graeme
