Default Porter Cable Batteries & Charging

    Greetings to all

I have been the very satisfied owner of a Porter Cable lithium cordless combo kit (drill, reciprocating saw, circular saw & light) for about six months now.

I am trying to find a cost effective (read .... cheap if at all possible!) way of getting additional battery power.

My kit has two 2.6Ah Li-Ion batteries and I can purchase one of these for around $140.00 on eBay or similar. However I am tempted to invest a similar sum in a couple of Ni-Cd batteries to give me more flexibility with my tools. The PC 18V tools are battery compatible with Black & Decker 18V Firestorm tools.

My question is this .......... can anyone confirm whether or not my charger will charge Ni-cd (or Ni-Mh) batteries safely? Porter Cable do sell what is called a multi-chemistry charger but I seem to think that I've read somewhere that this may not be necessary.

    Cheers - David

Check out amazon.com. They have all of the above (batteries and multi- charger) at very reasonable prices and shipping is quite cheap.

...I'd do more research....Li-ion and Ni-Mh have different charging requirements (specifically how the charge state of the battery is monitored for shutoff) which are unlikely to be catered for in a charger not designed for both.

With a really dumb charger (ie just an appropriate voltage source) you could do it, but you've got to work out the charge rate and time yourself; all the semi-smart chargers that do this for you have additional circuitry designed for the battery chemistry. Best case scenario is that the charger doesn't charge; worst case is the battery goes up in flames!
