    I worked for a bloke years ago who liked to race belt sanders in the back alley behind the job.. hugely entertaining, we'd call it the first sander to get to the end of a 20mtr extension lead.

    many a smoko was spent pondering the best grit for acceleration and speed.

    Of course one would never condone the misuse of power tools, and all OH&S rules must always be followed, all tools tagged and tested, etc., but...

    When I was working for the best hardware store in Adelaide (the orginal Flintware in Grote Street back in the 80's) we discovered that the secret to success in belt sander racing was in the way you laid out the extension cord. The cord needs to be completely free of twists and tangles and laid out in long loops in the direction of travel of the sander. Think of loops about 1.8m long x 300mm wide. Feeding the extension cord by hand actually makes the belt sander work harder. The best extension cords were made up from the thinner 23/0076 cable. The prepacked ones used 40/0076 cable which was a lot heavier in diameter and weight. To make the start fair all entries should be plugged into the same powerboard and the starter simply flicks the switch.

    I have done this in my driveway, albeit not intentionally, but it was good to watch and a service fit for an Ozito belt sander.

    G'day,

    I reckon this would make a beaut event for a Woodies get together as Stuart has mentioned. Maybe even local drags with times recorded in a state/city event and then compete nationally state vs state on over a set distance with time trials - exactly the ways normal drags operate.

    I can see it now, super modified deWalt sander, 80 grit racing belt for wet track, mag rollers, super slick graphite slipsheet, turbo wound armature, spoilers.
    Need a pit crew too for those super fast belt changes!!!
