General question on electric motors
Hello,
I got one of those Dremel lookalikes for Christmas. But I am a bit concerned with the way the motor behaves.
If I turn it on, and lel it idle, you can hear the motor speed up then sloww down. It will do this on any of the fixed speed settings.
What causes this? It must be a fault in the motor, but is it dangerous.
oh it is mains powered.
regards
Dod

It's probably got electronic speed control and its not setup quite right and is 'hunting'. If it holds a steady speed when you load it a bit then thats' probably what it is and should otherwise work OK.

Yup what Brian Says.
I have a german transformer controlled job that does similar - Pulses on idle at most settings but settles down to a smooth speed when under load.

Hi Dod without actually looking at it, I'd say it was faulty and I would take it back to the store and/or try another one out and see if it does the same.
Some times this effect could be caused by voltage flutuations, particualy if your in a country area where I have found that the power does vary considerably.
While I don't think it is dangerous it could certainly be if the A.C. input lead was a little loose as this would cause arking and then fire.
I base the above on my experience on the job.
