I have the Makita LS1214 which is the sliding version of the makita. I really can't fault it, it's great
I can't imagine their smaller saws being any different.

I'd go into bunnies and see if they still have the Makita LS1017L for $500.

If you're looking to "get back into it" I'd suggest buying a very good
SCMS instead. I've done the sequence: "oh, I'll just buy a low-end
DIY tool", then "hmm, I'd like more features and better quality",
and so on... I ended up with a Makita LS1012 which is very good,
but a considerably higher price than the non-sliding non-beveling
tools. (The modern equivalent in Makita's range is the LS1016
which has even more improvements.)
I guess all I'm suggesting is to reach/imagine a bit higher and buy
a good quality SCMS if you possibly can -- you'll use it for a great
many things that you don't think of right now, and it won't let
you down.

I've got a few different scms which include Makita and Hitachi but id suggest a Bosch 216mm Slide Compound Mitre Saw #GCM800S.
I came, I saw, I constructed

Don't buy makita green - this is same as Bosch green not that fantastic in my understanding. Buy the blue only! I have the non slider and I am very happy with it - the extra width of a scms would be an enormous bonus however I can't afford the enormous price tag of the makita scms. I have the ryobi scms and it sits out of the way unless I am rough cross cutting treated pine or some such !
The reviews for the 1017 seem mixed, so be careful - check other forum posts on the topic

I just wanted to second Pellcorp's caution about the 1017/1018.
Definitely check back through some older threads on this subject,
say around may-june 2010. I remember that the 1018 was intended
as an entry-level machine, and that the 1016 is far superior (as it ought
to be for the extra price).
It sounds like you're thinking the same way I did when I bought my
first SCMS. I went to Bunnings, compared some prices and the GMC
model looked "great" and was *much* cheaper, so I bought it. Sure,
it did the basic stuff ok, but was not very accurate and had a rather
coarse-toothed blade. So after a few years I decided to get the much
higher-priced Makita which I've been very happy with. But it would
have been much cheaper overall if I'd bought the Makita in the
first place!
Learn the lesson from those who've learned it the hard way: if
you're serious about woodwork then cough up the extra dollars
and only buy good quality tools even if they cost more.
Doing anything else is false economy.

Its probably just the small things that sway me towards the Bosch blue scms range such as the compact size and light weight. I just found them to be a very comfortable saw to use and from what ive seen and heard they are strong and reliable.
Changing between different bevel angles is much better on the Bosch than the Makita but that could just be a personal preference thing. Over time the Makita base can become a bit sloppy but the motors are tough and reliable so they just keep on going.
Some of the other Bosch range look interesting [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Bosch-4410-10-Inch-Dual-Bevel-Compound/dp/B0001408T8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1296095175&sr=8-1"]Amazon.com: Bosch 4410 10-Inch Dual-Bevel Sliding Compound Miter Saw: Home Improvement[/ame]I came, I saw, I constructed

This is just a cms Bosch so for a few bucks extra get the blue makita cms! Worth the upgrade the 1040 is a work horse and very accurate. Or go nuts and get the makita 1016 scms - if you can afford it you definately won't be disappointed - that is what I hope to upgrade to in a few years.

Be sure to let us know what you think of it - when you do. An accurate scms with some limitations would be preferable over the cms any day.
