Default Replacement belt - where can I get one

I recently bought a bench sander... when I was using it the other day it started to vibrate all over the place and then the sanding belt stopped moving even though the motor was still going. I opened up the casing for the rubber belt that runs from the motor to rotate the spindle for the sanding belt - the rubber belt was badly twisted and the edges had been shredding. I put it back on but it immediately twisted back up again and the spindle stopped rotating again. I'm wondering if its possible to get replacement one from anywhere without being a tradey... the belt is pretty small and the cross section is like a triangle that has had the point sliced off. (I live in Brisbane).

    MIndabout,

Let your fingers do the walking here - if you look up drive belts in the local yellow pages, it will give you a supplier close by.

I've had most success for my machines with a bearing supplier (either SKF, BSC or CBC) Seems logical when you think about it as they specialise in drivetrain componentry - bearings, pulleys, gear cogs and belts.

Oh, and take your old one with you when you go to buy another. That way, they can match.

    Cheers,

    eddie

Having said this, it could also be something siezing in the machine, and the belt falling off because something isn't turning freely that needs to. Just another point to consider.

Blackwoods have segmented belts, if they are in Brissy.

Blackwoods do have a outlet in Brisbane but expect to wait ages for service and be treated rudely when they do decide to serve you. At least that has been my experience 3 times in a row now!

I am aware of what they have but have never been in to experience the exceptional service you mention.
Good to see someone keeping up the image.
I recall once walking into a wholesaler to be told that they didn't serve ordinary people, I advised that I was outstanding and not ordinary as I left.

    Woodbutcher, you're dead right!!
Went there the other day to get a belt. I wanted to replace my lathe belt with a link type so I don't have to pull the headstock shaft out to change belts. I had checked Blackwoods catalogue, and had their catalogue # and all. The bloke who served me looked like he had just sucked on a rotten lemon, and was about as helpful as a dead fish. He told me in the surliest manner that it wasn't what I thought it was, & I needed some other section type. After about 15 minutes fossicking about somewhere in the back, finally informed me they didn't have what I wanted, so I paid for the couple of cans of Lanotec I noticed while I was waiting, because they were on special. He charged me the regular price, but I decided it wasn't worth the agro to make him redo the invoice, & just paid the extra couple of dollars & left - glad to be out of there......

Making a mental note to never bother with the place again, I went searching the industrial area, and ended up at a place called 'Powergrip' - (on the service road off Ipswich Rd) where the young bloke who served me was cheerful, helpful, and had a replacement on the counter in about 30 seconds (it WAS a common garden-variety 'A" section). This place has more types snd sizes of belts than you could imagine, so if you're anywhere near Oxley, that's the place to go for odd belts (or even not-so-odd ones).

    Cheers,
    IW

Thanks for the heads up on that place Ian. Dad is always after new places to get replacements for the machines at work so he will be grateful for the insight

Also, can you give a bit more info on those belts? I've almost got my lathe going and will be after a belt. What you've described sounds great!

Take it back to the dealer, or at least call them and tell them what has happened. Belts should last several years. If one is chewed up on a new machine you definitely have somthing wrong.

WB: multi-link vee-belts are supposed to be the bees knees, according to what I've read. Apart from the convenience of being able to shorten/lengthen and fit them to pulleys you would otherwise have to dismantle, they are supposed to be more efficient at power transmission, and transmit less vibration. Dunno if this is true or not, yet, as I have only just fitted mine, and am yet to give it a really decent workout.

Of course, there's always a catch - they cost 3 times what an ordinary vee-bely costs! But supposed to last at least twice as long.

There are a couple of different brands, and of course, I'm having a senior moment, & can't remember what mine is, but if you went anywhere where they sell belts and strike an assistant who knows the slightest thing about belts, they will recognise what you mean if you ask about multi-link type vee belts.

I'll give you an assessment of performance after I've useed mine for a month or two...........

    Cheers,
    IW

It is a pity when a branch of what is usualy a good company lets the rest down, I use Blackwoods at Edwardstown in S A they are always freindly and willing to help, I have never head to wait any longer than is reasonable

Just wanted to say a great big thank you for posting about Powergrip. I know I'm a bit late in the reply but it was actually only recently I ended up getting the belt... and I really wanted to second this place as the place to go when you need a replacement belt.

I've had so much trouble trying to get a belt - working in the city 9-5 its been impossible to get anywhere that is open and actually sells belts when you get there but finally I asked a friend who works not far from Powergrip to try there for me. He went in with my old belt and had a replacement in his hands in moments for $8. I'm so happy.... only wish they were located smack bang in the middle of the cbd.

    Cheers,
Thanks for the post, I needed a spare drive belt for my lathe, H&F charged me a motza for the last one, so I looked up the Sydney address of Power Grip.
They're in 5 Binney Rd.,Kings Park just up the street from The Steel Store.
I went over this morning, the bloke behind the counter was very helpful and the price!!! about 1/3 that of H&F. I bought 2.
    Cheers
