replacement commutator brushes
Hi all, I have a Millers Falls belt sander, probably getting on for 50 yrs old, Millers Falls are American and no longer in business, anyway I was using the sander the other day and it kept tripping the earth leakage at the meter box, mmmm the brushes and commutator was a bit sad and lots of sparks, the earth leakage might be sensing this and tripping OK time for a rebuild, I know I won't be able to get original parts so I'll see what Google can dig up, maybe old stock somewhere typed in carbon brushes clicked on the option with carbon brushes by size and clicked on first Aus company that makes carbon brushes (Morgan Carbon) (no affiliation) a phone call and new brushes are being organized
They wanted the old brushes as they reuse the spring and the cap, I also sent the armature away as well to have the commutator machined at no extra cost
So if u have an old machine where parts are no longer available it is possible to keep it going....google might well turn up something...
A few pics... as a side, note the dust extraction addition on the btm right of the sander.

I was trying to get the commutator spark with it running, it is much less that it was, when there is excessive sparks that travel all the way round the commutator it's time for a repair as further use will eventually lead to the dreaded smoke escaping syndrome

Hi Ray,
It is a Millers Falls sander like mine is it?
Mine was my Dad's which he bought more than 50 years ago, it has been used extensively at varoius times throughout it's life, lent it to a bloke and it burnt out but was rewired
It needs a new bronze bush on the armature which means I have to be a bit carefull with its use, apart from that it has been a good hard working machine
