Some old saw restorations
Here are some old saws I have been working on. There is still some rust around the teeth that needs to be removed I'll do that when I sharpen them.
Picture 1 shows the original state of 4 of the 5 saws.
Picture 2 shows a Tyzack, a Diston 12 and the keyhole saw has no markings on it. The keyhole and Tyzack saw handles came up nicely because they had no carvings on them and I could sand them a little harder whereas the Diston having the wheat markings on it I decided to be less aggressive with. Both the Diston and the Tyzack have very faint markings but unfortunately they do not photograph well with a flash. The Tyzack marking includes a elephant and the Nonpariel brand.
Picture 3 shows the detail of the Diston 12. The interesting thing about this saw is that it has the handle of the pre 20's saw but the blade of a later saw.
Picture 4 shows a couple of newer saws. A Swedish "Bushman" and my dear old Dad's much battered Spear and Jackson. The blade was heavily rusted and the handle was quite weathered (I suspect it had been left outside for a long time) and broken into 3 pieces. It took a lot of effort to get it to this point. You could almost hear the wood say "Ahh" when applied the first coat of linseed.
Any info on the ages of the Diston and the Tuzack would be appreciated.
Cheers

The Disston has the 1896-1917 medallion, which matches the handle. It is probably a 112 (the skew back version of the 12). These are Disston's top of the line saws. You will enjoy it.

Splendid Bob, really splendid.
I have an old Diston (not sure of the model), and your post has inspired me to bring the old girl back to full working condition. Methinks it won't need all that much work either...

Nice saws.
I did my first saw resharpen and tooth setting on the weekend. It worked beautifully - but took a fair bit of work to get it clean up as there were some pretty big notches in some of the teeth.
I was beginning to be afraid I was going darkside, so I used the Triton router with a Gifkins jig (borrowed from Sheddy) in the afternoon just to even things out.
